I assume it's the same shows anyway - I downloaded all these a while back, and the descriptions match up...
edit: I stand corrected - looks like there were some previously unavailable ones on the Soundcloud. Now they've out in the ether, I'm sure they'll pop up again before too long..

I managed to download 58, and I have listened to 3 of them.
I appreciate it the great man's work more now than I did then, bloody magic! -

the sound quality sounded a bit rough on the first couple i listened to, volume upping and downing it was the very start of a couple
is that just because the person doing the reordings C90 cassette was a bit worn at the start of the tape ?
how was the quality will ?FLAC quality or MP3 ?
Just started listening tonight; the one from 1975 that I am on now is excellent quality. Can followed by Laurel and Hardy's 'On the trail of the lonesome pine'.

I am now about halfway through listening to the programmes I managed to save. This is an amazing archive.
To think there were some days when I didn't listen to the programme when it was being broadcast. Shameful. -

I was really sorry to read that John Peel was a child abuser. Sadly Saville looked like one but I like John Peel and find it hard to accept. Just goes to show that you don't have to look like a nonce to be one.

The BBC's John Peel Peel once worked for a radio station in Texas.
Peel has said that girls, some as young as 13, used to queue up outside his studio to offer him sex.
"Well, of course, I didn’t ask for ID," he said.
"All they wanted me to do was to abuse them sexually which, of course I was only too happy to do."
Peel's wife committed suicide.
Peel was abused as a child himself.

Will all those who have tried to wipe Saville and Glitter off the face of history do the same with Peel or does the perception that he was "cool" make a difference?

My mother was upset when I told her I was a fan of his, she explained he tried to force himself upon her when she worked in PR. As she left the room he shouted something along of the lines of "No sex, no deal!"

This is a difficult one because I was friends with Peel for a very long time. I won't defend his having had sexual contact with young girls because, for one thing, neither would he have.
However, I think to compare him to Savile is both unfair and crude. Savile was an abuser of children his whole life, he sought out vulnerable girls who were unwilling and used force. He exploited every opportunity and situation he could. He was a predatory abuser.
Peel was unusually honest in talking about his past. But it was his past. It's very hard to discuss this subject, or establish a context, because very few men will be honest about it. I wonder, how many men, at that time, or even now, if they had young teenage girls throwing themselves at them and wanting casual sex would say no? We will all pretend most men would do the right thing. We all know that is a lie. I doubt, when I was an immature 20 yr old, that I would have said no to a 15 yr old girl. And if she was 13 and looked and said she was 16? Would I have asked or would I have let my dick do all the thinking?
Nowadays I would act differently and I am glad I was never in that situation.
So, yes, John behaved in away that is uncomfortable for his friends to think about and was uncomfortable for him to remember. If everyone who ever behaved liked that, or knows they would have done so given the chance (and how often do we confuse lack of opportunity with good behavior?) were honest then Peel would not be seen as all that unusual, certainly not nearly 50 years ago. Whereas at any time Savile would be seen as a grotesque and evil man. -

There is also a huge difference between young fans throwing themselves on someone famous, which happened all the time, and which still goes on today, and someone preying on young girls against their wishes.
I hardly knew Peel, though I met him several times and corresponded with him loads, and was aware of his admission of his early life before he met his wife, but I doubt he continued such behaviour once he was in a relationship with Sheila. And I would listen to his programmes endlessly, the same cannot be said for any other broadcaster. I am sure you all remember Home Truths. The mark of a really warm and genuine man. -

what has any of that got to do with the fact sex with underage girls (who you are fully aware are underage) is wrong and illegal? comparing him to someone worse than him doesn't make him any better
-

A fair point. Peel may have had a tainted past, but he wasn't predatory.
His first wife was 15, it was legal in the states at the time. -

I suppose it's about trying to figure out the nuances of it all, in this case through the example of someone we know something about. The age of consent is not standardised even throughout the EU (in Spain for example it is 13) so in one civlised, democratic country your actions wrong and illegal and in the next they are not.

Half the problem here is that the Media is now digging for dirt on any BBC DJ from that era, and are doing nothing more than recycling facts that Peel himself had been open about for years in an attempt to sell papers and scandalmongering.
Now I couldn't give a shit about Peel as I was never a huge fan, and what he did was wrong, but they are trying to paint him as a sexual predator like Saville and that's simply not the case.
What annoys me is that Peel is an easy target to try and make a headline out of, it's cheap journalism, inaccurate, and just jumping on the bandwagon.

I am not sure that I can agree with this. At a time when we talk about "zero-tolerance" for many things from racism to anti social behaviour, can we really operate anything else when it comes to the abuse of children. The defence that "they were throwing themselves at me" is akin to the defence used by the child prostitution rings recently when they described the children who they groomed and abused as "slags".
Did you fell any sympathy for Berlusconi or Ribery when they were involved with child prostitiutes?
I have known abusers. They did not have horns growing out of their heads. The successful ones were charming men who were good with and liked by children. Creepy ones like Saville often repel children.
Zero tolerance. That is all.

In most cases of child abuse, the victim has reached puberty.

You can be predatory without the "victim" being a child. It is very common for abusive men to use power to obtain sex from unwilling people. This happens all the time in the workplace and is one reason why there aare laws in place to protect junior employees from their superiors.
People who get off on abusing their power in this way are predators.
