It's not the instruments I mourn for, it's the song-writing.

With professional song-writers and "hit makers", there is so little incentive to push any boundary too far or to try anything new.

Hell, the structure of a song is now a predictable thing. Even you'd be hard-pushed to find a single song recently that wasn't in 4:3.

There's new music all over the place, really ground breaking stuff.
There's more incentive than ever to create new music as there's so little money in commercial stuff - you may as well do something you love.

I saw AK/DK live this year. I nearly spunked my load at how good they were.

Yeah, but good music used to reach the mass market, the homogenisation of the charts and the effect that TV shows have on the charts is making it harder for the lay person to be exposed to that music.

I 100% disagree with that... BITD much less exposure was given to non-chart music, maybe a bit of alternative/indie stuff here and there but that was it (John Peel aside)...
I misspent most of my youth in record shops getting the shop keep to play me stuff that looked interesting/I may have read about here or there...
These days you can click on YouTube/GrooveShark and hear just about anything you could ever want to... Kids have got it easy these days...

Rubbish, there was loads of exposure to non-chart music. For one thing there were more music programs on the TV, from Chart Show and White Room to The Word... now we seem to only have Jools Holland. Radio was always as hard, but the best stations now are all on DAB but most people still just have FM.

And I do agree with Bandcamp, GrooveShark, SoundCloud, Pandora... but the vast majority of their users are us old farts who already had the bug for music. What I'm talking about is giving this bug to new people... and that means getting this in the mainstream.

It's like porn.

You take in the stuff that's spoonfed to you, get bored of it, then you search out the freaky shit.

I reckon more kids than you think are listening to a vast range of music.

No-one who's ever discovered new music has sourced it from the mainstream, or very few at least.

I agree that some quality music telly shows are needed, but are kids really interested in that? It's all about downloading it, finding it themselves - as soon as it's mainstream the young hipsters don't want to know.
