Bikes on Trains - light rail trial petition.

Posted on
  • There is a Light Rail (tram-train) system planned between Sheffield and Rotherham in 2015. This is effectively a national trial of light rail that will have a strong impact on how light rail is developed across the country in the future. That in turn could impact on how existing rail systems in this country handle bikes.

At the moment, the operating company, Stagecoach, have decided that bicycles will not be allowed carriage on the system.

CycleSheffield have set up a petition to ask the DfT/Minister for Transport to override this decision.

It would be greatly appreciated if you would support this petition. Also if you are a member of a cycling group (borough groups of the LCC, board of the LCC, member of the CTC, a cycling club etc) then it would be appreciated if you could forward this petition around in an effort to garner support.

I realise that there is already a thread for Cycle Campaigning. However, I felt this issue deserved it's own thread for a bit to draw attention to it. Please could the lovely moderators wait until it has dropped off the first page before feeding the mergatron. Thanks.

  • Signed. Woeful integrated transport infrastructure is a thorn in this country's side.

  • Signed. Keep us updated on local news about this.

  • Signed - Thanks for brining it up! :D

  • Signed. Being able to take bikes aboard would be perfect for commuters. I think the Wrexham-Shropshire line has a trailer-carriage on the back for a dozen bikes, as do a lot of trains in Europe.
