Surly Steamroller owners...

  • I want to sell my steamroller f + f but I have no idea how old it is or how much its worth now... Its a grey paintjob, a bit chipped and one small ding on the downtube. Been riding it for 18 months. Any ideas?

Jess, I seem to remember it was from 2006? And it's got a 1 inch steerer (if that helps define the era..)

  • Haven't had a bike pic on here for a bit, so here's my steamroller!

I enjoy it a lot, it's got me back into road riding again - I'venot had a road bike for over 10 years, just MTB and town ratbikes ... so I am about to try swapping most of this over to a Crosscheck which I will run with gears, and revert back to an old town bike... can't afford to run two Surlys, I don't think. Hope I don't regret it! so I thought I'd better get the 'roller pic on here before the swap begins...

  • What's that fancy fork? Looks good.

  • Guess.

  • Thanks! Yep, 'Guess' seems to be the brand, I found them on ebay looking for cheap forks without too much sticker bling -

When I originally got the bike off ebay it had BMW Cluster forks, version 1, which weigh 1.6KG! Made the front end feel quite heavy.... Luckily they seem to have quite good second hand value, so I managed pretty much a straight swap for the Guess forks, but saved 1KG :-) I do quite like the look, but in hindsight I would have preferred to put the proper Surly forks back on it - my 28mm tyres only just fit and it makes the front end a bit low.

  • My steamroller is almost done!

  • Well now you got me worried :/

do you also own/ride a track bike? with a higher bb and so on

I ran my roller fixed daily for a year, zero pedal strike

    #tooslow?

  • I rode mine in many guises for a couple of years till it got nicked. Pedals and cages / clipless fixed or freewheel it always behaved. Pretty much zero pedal strike. I loved that bike. Thieving scum.

  • I've only ever had pedal strike once on it, going around a steep, downhill, off camber corner, been riding it for a year and a half now, so that's pretty decent!

  • Any one have any problems with pedal strikes on there Steamroller?.

Pedal strikes are not a problem.

  • no pedal strikes. lots of toe-verlap though.

  • Well as soon as i'm paid it will be built, so we shall see! ill just have to ride brakeless for now, eventually want to try it as a single speed though, but ill just see how it feels first.

  • Didn't know whether to put this here or in the CP thread, but I've got a shimano un54 bottom bracket that's 113mm on my roller frame. I'm looking into what Crankset I want to put on it now and was looking at the sugino rd2, but it says it requires a 103mm BB. The Andel cranks I've also looked at require 110mm BB. Will these not fit my BB, or will it stop me getting a good chainline? This is my 1st bike build so I'm a bit of a novice here.

  • You need a good chain line! get what ever size they recommend

I also plan on using Sugino cranks with a 103mm bb

  • The 113mm will give you a chainline 1.5mm off (in theory).

    That's fine.

  • I am new here, all I got to say is: I love my Steamroller! It was my first frame and besides the lower BB I simply love it. Good and stable ride!

  • Put bigger tyres on and you'll have a BB at a decent height, they were lower to compensate for that.

  • One should definitely try it out mounting tyres so big you haven't got much space left.
It will ride like a tractor. Fun guaranteed!

  • My Surly should be steamrolling the streets tomorrow morning! so exited :D

  • Glad. You got one, you'll love it . Just got my back wheel so mine is all done. That what I told the wife lol . Still want new cranks.
    Hope you enjoy your ride

  • Thanks man

2/3 mile walk to my lbs will suck though, all that is left to do is to fit a headset

  • Surly is done, for now anyway.

later in the day ready to commute

next month/payday i think i will get some full mudguards, new saddle, shorter stem and black lock on grips, maybe a front brake but i don't really want one

  • +1 front brake

    +1 full mudguards

  • +1 extra chain link.

  • +1 front brake

I know this is a stupid reason not to, but i hate how they feel in the wet with dirty rims, its like my brake pads are made of sand paper. I can stop just fine without, i ride much safer, i do maintain my chain and everything, so i see no reason to have one.

    +1 extra chain link.

Why? it had plenty of clearance already.
