Long lasting, skid resistent tyres?

  • I fitted a used 23c Stelvio on my Dolan, so good so far, grips way better in the wet than the cheapo 28c Zaffiro used before it, that tyre is like skidding on ice on a smooth wet road (still a cheap n cheerful rear tyre though)

I originally got it from a freind who used it as front tyre over the summer last year, then i used it on fixed gear with a front brake for a few months, now just finishing it off on my brakeless Dolan, been on for a few weeks now, but the canvas is just peeping through in a few spots, probably got another week left in it.

    Not bad for a 5er :)

  • I was talking for riding brakeless with.

    I am brakeless.

  • Does anyone know anything about the Michelin dynamic classic? I had a flick through a few pages of this thread but couldn't find anything. They're about a tenner each, I was thinking about getting some.

  • what ratio are you running?

    48/17

  • Continental Supersport Plus vs Gatorskid hardshell? Anyone got any direct comparisons, all i care about is which lasts longer really. The supersport is about a tenner cheaper in most places

I realise this is old but I've had both on the same bike with the same ratio and they lasted the same - roughly 3 months for both of them. I was probably skidding more/harder on the Gatorskin but I was riding the bike a bit less. Also I rode the Gatorskin till I went right through and burst a tube but I stopped with some life left on the Supersport Plus.

I really liked the Supersport Plus at the time but I'm not sure if my opinion would be different now I ride a lot more. I'm going to try another one next time I need a new rear, which should be soon, and will report back.

they're shit. wear through really quickly and lots of punctures.
In my experience cheap tyres are a false economy, a decent tyre around 25 quid will more than last 2.5 times longer than one costing ten quid.

  • cheers! I'll steer clear then.

  • If you want a nice tanwall tyre, Panaracer Pasela's are awesome, i skidded through a few in the past and they are alright, more of a road/touring or front tyre

  • Well it'd be for my girlfriend and she's not exactly the skidding type... So i'll give those a go I think.

    not necessarily twoo.

    a rando @ £14, lasts me longer than a gatorskin @ £28

  • Not that they've ever claimed to be but Michelin Dynamics are definitely not skid resistant, Went straight through to the tube (que load bang and shriek from a lady cyclist behind me) in a few days and i was even trying to not skid.

  • Finally killed my Rando', bloody tough! has layers like an onion, i first took it off because i saw the canvas layer in a few spots, not realizing it has more than one layer, so i put it back on and ridden it for a almost a month, another happy customer for the Rando'.

I'm about to finish off a used 25c Pasela, also should be a bit tougher than those michelin dynamics if you wanted some tan walls...

  • imho

conti Hardshells (1 month so far)

    • great ride quality
    • good grip in wet
    • cost
= Sweet tyre. don't want to kill it to death cos it's so good so in the end it lasts longer than cheaper tyres anyway.

    Soma everwear

    • not bad ride quality
    • fun predictable skidding in the dry
    • LETHAL in the wet. Zero. friction.
= buy the new wear marker one cos otherwise there's no indication of when it's about to go bang. Careful in the wet.

    Rando

    • takes ages to skid through
    • good consistent slide
    • ride quality
    • heavy
= get if if you can't resist skidding at every opportunity
  • Don't really like my Soma everwear, the fact its 23c doesn't really help, but i don't like how it grips when skidding and like you said, has no grip in the wet, about as good as a Zaffiro then. doesn't feel that tough either, just thick, feels sluggish for a 23c to

not terrible but don't plan to buy one again

  • Are Ribmos any good, just changed by back tire to one on the advise of the guy in Tokyo fixed?

  • A friend used one, 28c i think, he didn't like the shape to skid with, as its like a motorbike tyre sort of shape, said it started off gripping more like a 23c when skidding, then when it wears down it changes shape and has quite a flat profile. Felt a bit sluggish to, compared to the Pasela's he used previously, but they were not as thick, i think.

Any one here skidded with 32c's? Rando' Hyper to be specific.

  • tried the search but couldn't find much, what are people's opinions about the Thickslick?

  • Mine survived brakless riding longer than any other tyre I've had.

Felt a bit sluggish sometimes but less so than other tyres with that much rubber, and it was pretty grippy.

  • Thanks. Tbh though even if you said they were utter shit I'd probably still get one because I love the obnoxious label

  • I really liked the Supersport Plus at the time but I'm not sure if my opinion would be different now I ride a lot more. I'm going to try another one next time I need a new rear, which should be soon, and will report back.

I bought one of these maybe a couple of months ago and either:

    • there's a big difference between 23c and 25
    • something's changed about them since then
    • I got the worst dud ever
    • I was out of my mind when I had the first one

This tyre fucking sucks. It's too tight. The first time I put it on took about 20mins and it was so tight that when I used cable ties to hold down the side I'd already got on, the cable ties just snapped because of how much force I had to use. Then despite being extremely careful to check the tube wasn't pinched it punctured a couple of minutes from home. It took 10mins just to get it off again and I snapped my levers in the process.

I've tried it a few times since then, with different rims and with different tubes, including tubes that should be too small and my aerospoke which is usually extremely easy to get tyres on, and I've never made it more than 5 mins from my door. I guess most of you will dismiss this as user error but I'm really very careful when I fit tyres and I've only had one pinch flat before this, i.e. my first.

Also in the brief time I've ridden on it it felt pretty shit, the rubber is really stiff and nasty.

tl;dr I do not recommend super sport plus

  • I'm going to get another thickslick

  • Yes, high five!

  • Re-fuse!

  • ^^yeah! Fuck the haters, I like the ugly logo too
    ^no fam :c

  • rear rando 25c punctured today when out "training". something went all the way through, couldn't find it though.

bought a durano plus 25c from bike shop.

opinions on switching the rando on the front, to the back, putting the durano plus on the front???????

i've only ever ridden fixed on randos, and only ridden on randos fixed.

i don't skid to stop, only to impress fine ass ladies.

i have a front brake that gets used once every 20k or so.
