Replaced dimmer switches with normal ones in 5 rooms today, all the wires were brown... thought that sort of bodge job was very illegal?

I marked all the L1 wires with green tape and swapped like 4 like across the switches... #whatcouldgowrong?

I did that. Hated the constant zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zapping noise from cheap or old dimmer knobs.
