Thanks everyone for taking the time to post. I must admit that I was skeptical about the advice that I was getting from the doctors I saw because neither of them struck me as being particularly active... however everyone on here has said exactly what they've been saying - let the bone heal properly in order to enjoy many years of pain-free cycling.
Thanks everyone!

Hmm, changing gear would be difficult but time trial bars on a road bike (on a turbo trainer) would at least let you keep some semblance of fitness without endangering your scaphoid and be jolly good for your mental health.....
Just an idea,

oh and the scaphoid isn't tiny, it's the second largest bone in your wrist and transmits almost all of the pressure of the thumb in a fall, hence the reason it cracks.

H. ScaphoidI think I broke C or B, enjoyed two lovely months inplaster. Spent christmas eve in the Hospital and got to meet Father Christmas the next day.
Still feels a little sore in the cold. Oddly cycling is the one thing that rapidly improved the movement in my wrist after having it pinned. Couldn't stand up on the bike though at first so curbs and potholes were a problem.

I've bust scaphoid twice too. First playing footie, second being run over in May - by a fud who's now in jail, so there's some decent karma. If it doesn't heal properly, it'll really fuck up, but you can turbo / spin bike / whatever, as well as run. I'm still at 80% mobility now, bloodflow thing means it takes aeons.
But in short, HTFU.

This is the most depressing thread I have ever read. I broke my scaphoid 5 weeks ago and have been in a cast all that time. It still feels fucked. Seeing the doc in a week to get it removed, and he felt at the time of putting it on that it should be back to normal.
This thread, and the fact that it still hurts like a bitch makes me think not.

I broke mines 2 years ago. I didnt realise it was broken until a month after the accident. I was then in a arm cast for 6 weeks. I took it easy for another month, then was back on the bike. Now I hardly ever notice it day to day, unless I try breaking a fall using my hands (natures warning reminder).
Tell-tale signs are tenderness in the "snuff box area" of your thumb/hand. Pressing hard into it causes pain. Prior to cast, I would also occasionally lose grip when trying to lift something heavy single handed.

Update on my scaphoid break.
10 days in a splint
4 weeks in a fibreglass castThey took it off last friday, so 10 days ago. It hurt like crazy and I couldn't move wrist without agonizing pain. I was convinced it was still broken but the doctor told me otherwise.
I'm pretty ticked off with the hospital though as they said they would write to me with a an appointment to start my rehab, which they didn't. Have shouted at them now and have an appointment for tomorrow.
Despite this, I decided to do my own rehab despite the pain, forcing into flexion side to side and forward and backwards. Also have been squeezing a tennis ball diligently. I started doing this a day after the cast came off.
Now I can pretty much do everything, I think I have about 90% range of motion back. The doctor told me not to ride the bike for 4 weeks and not to do any boxing for 6 weeks. However I started riding a few days ago and it doesnt hurt. I personally feel it has been helping my recovery as it is exercising it. I can't do any push ups or put any significant amount of weight on my palm yet, but I'm sure that will come soon.
Have to say I have been pleasantly surprised by my recovery. Scaphoid fracture recoveries don't have to be as bad as some of the internet stories might suggest!

Hope you heal fast. In the end it was about a year until my wrist felt 100% again. Now it feels like an ancient memory. Hooray human body.

If it hurts after a warm up then its probably too early . I feel for your frustration but mine took months to set and heal properly. Hand hot plunges and squeezing a soft tennis type ball should help .

Hope you heal up quick, definitely do regular physio. I broke mine quite a few times skating, and being the stupid teenager I was, thought medicating it with ibuprofen and Stella was a great idea.
Now it doesn't bend more than 45°, never had any problems from it luckily.

I have now joined the broken scaphoid club. I fell on my left wrist a month ago but never occurred to me I might have broken it till I saw a physio and he suggested I get an x-ray.
I smashed both my wrist about 7 years ago in a MTB incedent and broke many bones in my right had/wrist. It now has some hardware holding it together BUT I didn't entirely listen to the docs and went back to work and riding a bit too early. So now it sound like I have rocks in joints and reduced mobility and pain every time I ride.
For what its worth I ride with risers, but drops with hoods are more comfortable. For some reason my neck kills when I use drops. Must aggravate an old surfing injury.
Moral, do the physio and exercises even if they are annoying.
