• Low speed impact.
I'm trying to work out if the fork or frame was damaged. (You stare for so long, the more you need a second opinion!).
I put a new front wheel on, it fits fine and runs true but obviously don't want to be riding around if the front fork is bent..

  • It LOOKS okay to me. It could have a small bend which you might be able to feel as a tighness in the head set. FWIW when I wrote off a steel frame in a front end smash, the forks were absolutley fine. The frame buckled on the top and down tubes, just behind the head tube. The front wheel had an aero rim and was absolutely fine too.

  • Pop the forks out, and lie them flat on a table. I reckon you may have a very slight bend of the steerer at the crown, but being steel, this isn't necessarily dangerous.

I had my forks which were in a similar state straightened.

  • Try riding no-handed too, see if the steering goes to one side.

  • They're bent, look at the curve at the bottom...

The frame is mid 60's and the curve at the bottom, part of the style of the times. Although if i'm wrong on this, then it's been a major hazard since before i aquired it!
It was the line going through the head set into the forks that was concerning me. It's moving freely but lying it flat might be an idea. Simple things are often the best...

And some fell on stony ground........

  • Getting my other bike out this morning, i looked down at the fork and it is bent plain as day. So 1 week later = fresh set of eyes = bloody obvious...
