The (rather dated FixieLords) fashion is for top levers. I recommend proper levers on the drops if you want more positions for your hands on the bars. Better for climbing etc. Finally realised this a couple of years ago when I built my One Bike to Rule Them All, and got the Tektro/Cane creek ones which I like a lot. You can even get them with gum-coloured hoods for that old-school look.
