That must have been very slack with the MTB fork if it's 70° with a road fork.
Most road forks for short reach brakes are about 370±5mm axle to crown

The 3T Funda with a rake of 59mm...
53mm max, and bear in mind that for the price of a Funda or Cervelo FK26SL you could buy a good second hand road/TT frame and fork :-)

It's just an old Schwinn rigid. My polo frame is similar a 400mm fork gives it a 70deg HT. Both frames are of a similar age - 12-15yrs.
I'm sure I can find some forks on ebay or somewhere in the depths of the internet. The frame is just sitting here with knackered dropouts and no cable guides. I won't be able to sell it so I might as well use it.

Here's a plan:
1: Use a trekking/hybrid fork (~420mm) with a Mini-V brake
2: Tell everybody you're using science, proven by both the 12h & 24h Competition Record holder and Team GB

Interesting. See what's cheap. We have 90% of the components so as soon as I sort out the dropouts and forks it can be tested

Have sent off an entry for the Monsal HC. Going to give it a go on the fixed.
However, a week later they're running the Mam Nick HC. Could be tempted. 2.1k on an average of 10%. Records suggest that it was last run in 1956 and the fastest rider was 6.41 on 60". Wondering what my chances of getting to the top are on 55". Any suggestions.

Came third in a hill climb today, which was nice. First 25 next Saturday, which probably won't be nice

Nice work. Which one?
It's looking very wet this week - aero mudguard time.. ;)
There's a Westerley 25 on HCC001 (Drift Road) this weekend I think but I'm not feeling much like racing. Might have another go at a 10 instead somewhere.
Any fast 10s left this year?
-
• #3435
Just a local one in Leicester, only 8 seconds off the record, might have to do some training before the next one. I think all of the fast 10s are finished now, after the cancellation of the v718 event that was so hyped up?
-
• #3436
Yeah, that was looking crazy, like a National Champs.
Not bothered personally, don't think I'd even have qualified for that kind of event.I might scope out some faster courses for next year.

Although there is no single gear news in this report I am posting it because I feel there may be some interest in the reference to place to place records, a subject which I think has never been mentioned in the column.
This is an aspect of time trialling which has always attracted me, although sadly I have never attempted a record myself and it's certainly too late for me now. However it looks as though I may at last be able to have an involvement - as a reporter.Hounslow & District Wheelers.
**Autumn 25 **(23rd September 2012)Last Sunday Nic Stagg maintained his firm grip on the Hounslow’s club 25’s, recording the fast time of 57 minutes 25 seconds for a comfortable win.
Paul Holdsworth was in the silver medal position with a creditable 58.50, while Lawrence Wintergold took third place with 1.2.01. These are all good times on the slow West of Windsor course, particularly since they were done in bad weather conditions with heavy rain and a strong, cold easterly wind which caused the slowest quarter of the field to fail to average twenty miles per hour. It should be said that however slow those riders were, at least they showed grit and determination to finish.
Over the past three seasons Nic has won almost every club 25 that he has ridden, the exceptions being Midsummer 2011 where Paul Holdsworth came out on top, and Autumn 2010 and 2011 which were both won by our second claim member Wouter Sybrandy who rides as a pro for the Sigma Sport team. Sadly Wouter was absent from this year’s event because he was badly injured in a crash on the final stage of the Tour of Britain last week. The most recent report we have is that he is in a ‘stable condition’ in hospital. Our thoughts go out to him.
A mention should be made of third placed Loz Wintergold who is the new club Best All Rounder Champion and who had ridden 40 miles to the start from his home in Sussex. A report of his BAR season has been delayed by a slow official result for the 12 hour event, but this should appear next week.
Although Loz can turn in fast tens and twenty fives, he has enjoyed a more distinguished career at the longer distances. He has shown great form this year, for example by taking third place in the Kent CA Twelve Hour event, in spite of serious mechanical problems. Perhaps his form was better than he himself expected, because now, with the normal racing season at an end, he has decided to turn his attention to place to place records. His first target, really just a practice for later attempts at regional and national records, will be the Hounslow’s club record for Hounslow to Worthing and back. This has stood to the credit of J. Howes since time immemorial in a time of 5 hours 43 minutes 1 second, and although the large number of traffic lights which have sprung up since Mr. Howes epoch will doubtless cause some problems, this record should be a relatively easy *hors d’oeuvre*.
**Result Autumn 25 for 2012 **(top eight )
- Nic Stagg 57.48
- Paul Holdsworth 58.50
- Loz Wintergold 1. 02.01

- Brent Skinner 1. 06.40
- Andrew Caldwell 1. 09.14
- Jill Bartlett 1. 10.00.
1st on handicap: Mark Lorenzi, 1st on Vets’ Standard Paul Holdsworth, 1st Lady Jill Bartlett.

Hounslow to Worthing and back.
I can see why my old club, Brighton Mitre, had a Worthing-and-back record, but why does Hounslow have one*? Surely being the first out-of-town stop on the ancient Bath Road would suggest such destinations as Bath, Bristol and Cardiff? Also, with the turn off to the South West just outside Hounslow, you could be expected to have records to Salisbury, Exeter and Lands End.
*I think I may have an answer - looks like Worthing might be the closest point on the sea coast, depending on how you define the boundary between the Thames estuary and the North Sea.

It may seem to some that I have a long memory, but I can tell you it is not limitless, and I'm afraid the answer to your question is lost in the mists of the primeval swamp. I'm not sure that anyone even knows when our existing record was set.
We do have a Hounslow - Newbury and back record on the books, but I guess Loz chose Worthing because of the really excessive numbers of traffic lights between Hounslow and Maidenhead.

Land's End to London in under 12 hours.. ?
London - Edinburgh under 17:48.. ?
York - Edinburgh (300k) under 8:21
These would be much more interesting than the National 12 and 24hr records which I also have 0 chance of getting near.

Lands End to London - Depending on how London is defined for the purposes of the records that somewhere between 270 and 290 miles taking in Bodmin Moor, North Devon, Somerset and the Salisbury Plains before taking in the urban hell of Hampshire and Surrey. All while maintaining and average pace of at least 22.5 mph.
I guess it's doable, particularly with the prevailing wind. I'd recommend starting at around 4pm at the end of March, preferably on a weekday in the Easter Holidays.

Ended up doing 1:03:30 which I'm rather pleased with. I was overgeared, and mental sidewinds meant I was only in the extensions for about 10 miles so plenty of potential for improvement next season! Winner did 51:20

London = Hyde park corner/marble arch for records going west, st pauls for records going north.
Hippy, if you do have a crack at any of these, I for one will be keen to read about your exploits afterwards.

Looks to be a lot of background work needed for these attempts. Notice of attempt, judges and planning based on prevailing wind and other conditions, traffic, etc. Not sure my feeble brain could cope. I might be interesting to try some of them though, unofficially, in training or whatever just to see what's likely to be possible.

"I can see why my old club, Brighton Mitre, had a Worthing-and-back record, but why does Hounslow have one"
Slightly ot Kingston Phoenix still run a kingston to worthing tt every year, now in it's 53rd year and run in July. They are very welcoming of riders from other clubs if you fancy a challenge

Could someone with a bit of insider knowledge give a sort of N00bs summary to hill-climbs. When the season is, how to find them &c. &c.
I did quite a few casual TT's over the course of a couple of years up until a year and a half ago but since then I've focused on running ultras. I want to get back into TTs, and want to give hill-climbs a go. In the past, for ease, I usually just consult the local club TT schedule but that has nothing through the winter.
The CTT website is predictably opaque, I've found a few in October in the London West (H) area but I'm based in Oxford and ideally I'd like to keep travel to a minimum. As ever I find getting any more info than course code to be like getting blood from a stone. Any tips welcome.

Forgot to add the headset stack into the equation.
It's now 68.8° with a trail of 87mm
The 3T Funda with a rake of 59mm would give a trail of 72.5mm which sounds alright.
I could always steepen the HT to 72° by lifting the BB 20mm. Not gonna notice that much difference in the BB height.
