  • Any minor differences should be easily fixed by playing with stem length, seatpost layback and saddle positioning.

    That is a true story

  • I will double check frame sizes tomorrow

  • Got my Roller frame today. Want to take off the stickers. Is the gorilla tape method genuine?

  • Probably. Or use a hairdryer and then scrape with a sharpish plastic object.

  • ^^ I think some people use a credit card. I used my thumbnail.

  • Use an old credit card though because it'll blunt whatever object you use.

  • Am I likely to damage the paint underneath?

  • The powdercoat on Surlys is pretty tough stuff. I'd say try a tiny bit with your nail first.

  • Nail and CC - it is easier than you think.

I found all those logos on the fork to be a bit excessive. They all came off with patience. I don't mind the down tube and top tube ones though. A little ID is fine by me. Ooh that rhymes.

  • I wouldn't be too precious about the steamroller paintjob anyways, had mine on the road <5 months and there's massive chips out of the powder coat everywhere from road debris and that's before we even hit winter.

rollers need to look a little roughed up anyways, they can take it.

  • Any one have any problems with pedal strikes on there Steamroller? trying to decide if i should go fixed or single speed, or possibly both but i doubt id ever use both sides, if i go fixed i may go brakeless

...can't be arsed with the 3 speed hub idea i was thinking about for a while.

  • I never had a problem when I was running fixed with 25c tyres, 175 cranks and large cages.

  • 'smaller, flatter' pedals? Short cranks, awareness, etc.

I have managed some strikes. But it isn't really a problem as you are going to be doing some really tight leaning should that happen.

How about pointing your foot down (cages seam to be the safest option for this), and let the cage strike the ground first? Handy warning and it may produce some nice sparks. :-)

  • I will be using some bmx pedals with straps or mks touring with toe clips, but i will use some 165mm Sugino cranks with a 103mm bb which will help things

I do have a habit of sharp turns at slower speeds, maybe a bit to confident with my bike handling skills at times!

I only pedal striked like twice on my track frame on some sketchy slanted corners in the 6/ish months i owned it, but i used to do it all the time with my old conversion, which had a much lower bb, as the steamroller seems to have(?)

  • I will be using some bmx pedals

Why these clunky things? They're wide. And even cancel out your advantage with a short crank.

This is my CSB with BMX pedals: A friend built his conversion with 170 mm cranks + BMX pedals. A strike would happen at about leaning somewhere at 30°. If not less. At least I got him for going with shorter cranks, but I still don't get this craze using these fat platform pedals.

The BB drop on a Steamroller is closer to a road frame rather than a track frame. Or just mount bigger tyres. Helps a lot too.

  • In one word, Comfort.

I admit they don't give the best power transfer but you don't get that annoying edge of a track pedal digging in your foot and skidding is really easy, totally personal preference with those style straps though.

i actually have a Steamroller frame in my shed and will eventually find out this stuff my self so i'm not sure why i'm even asking! (boredom?)

  • I want to sell my steamroller f + f but I have no idea how old it is or how much its worth now... Its a grey paintjob, a bit chipped and one small ding on the downtube. Been riding it for 18 months. Any ideas?

  • Comfort.

HTFU and enjoy life without pedalstrikes. Or not.

My shoes are thinning down at where the pedals meet and had to put in some insoles so that it isn't that painful... Think I need new shoes now.

    (boredom?)

    Must be.

No pedal strikes ever in 3 yrs: fixed, 165mm cranks, 25mm tyres

One sold on here for £125 very recently.
I'd give you that depending on size and how big that ding is if you're serious about selling.
I'm after a 56 I think (I ride 56 road bikes, but I know the geo is slightly different).

  • Sorry for the late reply...

Thanks for that. Yes, the geo is weird. I think mine measures up to be a 55 top tube.

  • I am so sorry. I missed the whole point of this thread - as have most posters. It is about Surly Steamroller owners.

So, three things about me: I am a Pisces, play blues harmonica and have an allotment.

  • Yep, reverted back to freewheel as I was getting pissed off with the amount of pedal strike I was getting and how slow and upright I had to take corners (28c / 165mm). I was running cages and straps so you might get away with a smaller bodied clipless pedal. Either way the Steamroller has got a low BB and doesn't like being lent over in corners fixed.

Well now you got me worried :/

do you also own/ride a track bike? with a higher bb and so on

  • I had the occasional pedal strike on both the 'rollers I owned, with various tyre/foot retention/pedal/fixed/freewheel combinations. Personally I didn't find it to be much of a problem, even for polo. Just power through it!
