  • Excellent i've found this http://www.lfgss.com/thread17938.html on locks!

  • I use a Kryptonite New York 3000. Its very good. Not as strong as the Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit (less room for a thief to prize it open) and much heavier to carry about. Kryptonite 3000 is a good option if you want to lock through both your frame and your front wheel. Mini is pretty frustrating if your trying to lock your bike to anything larger than a railing.

  • To be fair since I have lived in Hackney I've had my saddle and seat post stolen, my laptop stolen from my car and my iPhone stolen out of my hand (by a guy on a bike)

  • I have registered my key with them and so far I have had no trouble as I have an evolution mini which doesn't attract much as its quite beefy. With the registration you can claim if it gets nicked in my case £900 also they can send you new keys if you lose all three issued Hope this has helped :j

  • Im planning on registering with kryptonite

  • Son i

    Oh beautiful Hackney....

  • I had my first fixed gear nicked from outside the pub i was drinking in, reported it and accepted that my bike was gone, got on with life bought another one etc. and then one day i get a phone call from my best mate saying they have seen it being ridden and followed it back to the guys house... long story short i got my bike back ;)

  • without buyers thiefs are out of work, stop buying stolen. pass the word

  • Oh shit, total revelation, thanks mate!

  • there's got to be some mileage in a hackney vigilante crew no?

    Can't be said often enough.

  • Can't be said often enough.

Needs to be laser engraved on every bike top tube!

  • Er, easy to beat.

  • Was in Hackney yesterday and got offered a ''fixie bike'' by two different guys within 5 minutes of being there. Was my first time there and one of the guys looked like he'd survived being shot in the face so I didn't do anything about it.

    A common occurence, I'm guessing...

  • I was there to pick up a tyre and some guy did exactly the same. on a bus...

  • thanks for the info very useful

  • Looking for a bit of advice here. My mountain bike was stolen from outside the local gym a couple of months ago. As it wasn't on my property I'm not insured, so I've written to the gym trying to claim some money back off them. They say that because there are signs up saying items are left at the owners risk that it's not covered, but they have given me 2 months free memership as a 'goodwill gesture'. However the signs only say that vehicles left in the car park are left at owners risk. Is my bike classed as a vehicle? Also it was locked to their bike rack which is on the path away from the car park. All technicalities I know, but I've been arguing with them for a couple if months and want to know if its worth threatening to take legal action, and how I'd go about doing that. Cheers :)

  • Why would they have any liability?

  • TBH, I doubt legal action is gonna end up going your way. They will have made sure they aren't liable for loss of your property.

  • That's what I feared, my thinking was that if they need a sign saying cars are left at owners risk then surely they should have one for cyclists?

  • No, definitely not. I doubt that their sign relating to cars does anything meaningful legally, but IANAL.

Do put a picture of your bike up in the 'Stolen Bikes' thread. You never know, sometimes stolen bikes are found.

  • It is worth -threatening- to take legal action - even perhaps going as far as to get a solicitors firm to send them a letter, or fake one on letterheaded paper, maybe make it more fun by making up a slightly unbelievable firm name, like gateyurs honeydack and whiteface for example. The fact they have the sign doesn't mean they've checked it covers them. If you have the time, I'd love to hear how you get on, but I would agree it's not worth pursuing legally in order to get much money out of them - no likely settlement would even come close to making up for the time, effort and money you'd put in, and you are unlikely to be successful in any case.

Remember though, it's a mistake to assume that people know they're not liable just because they refer to their sign. Lots of signs don't make any legal difference or have any legal standing, but they shut most people up so they do their job...

    Yeah, that makes sense.

  • New to this forum....but definitely amazing advice!! Prevention is always better the COST which when paying out for a new bike seems the obvious and annoying solution!! Hindsight and all that Jazz!!
