Pardon me asking but how do they get into the canal?...Are they chucked in by their so called owners or are they native to the Regents Canal?

The former. None of them are natives they are almost all dumped in there my irresponsible bastard owners. However it's something that's been happening for a good thirty years now and there is some evidence of breeding populations in the canals, although broods are very unlikely to survive because of the conditions. It's very sad, but also causes a lot of problems for breeding birds and native fish.

This is totally disgusting that people just lob them into the canal. Hope he finds a great new home. Buddy of mine used to keep terrapins when we were kids and every summer we'd make those little bastards a nice outdoor paddling pool and they'd inevitably try and rip our fingers off. Good times.

What does looking after one entail?
Edit: Had a look, got space, not got time.

:(
I wouldn't have said he requires a lot of time tbh...

This terrapin looks lovely! I wish I could take him but I'm not allowed pets :(
Terrapins take so little time, they're really easy pets to have and while they're not exactly cute or cuddly (I mean, you can try cuddling them but they'll just bite you), they're really interesting, lovely to look at and quite amusing.
All he needs is a tank with water and a big stone under a lamp to sit on, some food put in the tank every now and then (crabsticks!) and occasional cleaning out - I can't remember how often it was but the hamster I had as a kid was WAY more hassle.

I know! Hopefully Dakin can provide him with a nice new home...

As an added incentive dakin, if you take him in I will buy him a bandanna and his first karate lesson. Why should turtles get all the fun?

From Wikipidia:
Within the second volume of the Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the popular comic book heroes are revealed as specimens of the red-eared slider. The popularity of the Turtles led to a craze for keeping them as pets in Great Britain.

I'm leaving on Saturday and sheldon still hasn't found a new home! I'm starting to panic now!
So I managed to rescue another terrapin from the canal but as I'm moving out of London soon it needs a new home.
It's much more of a manageable size than the female I rescued so hopefully someone would like him. He is around 7 inches long and in great condition, really nice shell so I don't think he has been in the canal long.
I will try and put up a picture in a bit.
He is currently in one of my ponds at work in Mile end so will need picking up from there. Thanks guys.
