A track set up 400 sports bike on british roads will have you pissing blood. Not to say that they're not enjoyable but they're not really forgiving.
I'd consider something like an ER6 as a road all-rounder. They look pretty funky, can be made to handle well and you can tune the nuts out of them if you get bored.
Or an old monster 900, anything really, fear tends to act as a natural break on exuberance. I used to crash loads more on little bikes precisely because I was always trying to squeeze every last drop out of them.
400 have around 55bhp and with good suspension set up, to me are a real hoot. Skinny enough to wizz in and out of traffic, learn to be smooth and keep the power on. How about a supermoto something like a DRZ400sm they are a hoot.
