Bottom Bracket Help

Posted on
  • I have an old Harrier City Sprint (I think that's what it is) but the previous owner has smashed the cranks onto the bottom bracket and they are stuck. What should I do, I guess I need to replace the BB but I have no Idea what size/ type I need.

  • you wont be able to replace the bb without removing the cranks -
what have you tried so far to remove them?

  • Is it possible to post photos of the offending cranks? A the cotter pins out?

  • I've tried Everything in my power, hitting them with a mallet, they just won't budge.
I'll get some photos soon as.

  • Sorry if they're poor pictures, it's a shame cos I like the bike, might have to just chop them off.

  • if inner threads not fucked? = crank puller. ebay =£5 [ish]

  • there are specific crank pulling tools that screw in to the threads on the inside of the crank arm that allow you to pull the crank off the BB spindle. sometimes the threads are stripped though and you have to resort to other methods. people have had success with pickle forks

  • Yup ball joint splitter..............does work [tested]

  • Thanks guys, I'll give it a go, If not they're getting cut off and I'll replace it all.

  • I've tried hitting them with a mullet
theres your problem right there, use Cod, bigger and harder than yr average Mullet

Ahahaha, we all know I meant mallet.

  • By the way, Is there much of a chance that the axle has been damaged by the the imbecile who used to own this bike?

  • unlikley, they are made of heat treated veryfuckinghardium.

  • Unless he has used something very shark, or left it in a dodgy plaice, it is probably OK

  • stop your whaleing, and help out, he might flounder other wise

  • btw it's not unusual for cranks to get stuck on BB spindles. and the fact that yours are stuck doesn't mean anyone bashed them on really tight. that's why so many old crank arms have stripped threads, because the cranks pulling tool has pulled them out before the crank has come lose off the BB spindle. if you use a crank puller be sure to screw it into the crank threads as far as possible, to obtain maximum purchase and avoid stripping threads.
