Battens as in lengths of wood, nailed to the hatches over a layer of canvas/similar to stop the water getting in.
=stop the boat filling up with water due to inclement weather and sinking, which is considered sub-optimal by the sailing fraternity.
Apart from those in Das Boot, I suppose.
