Cutting forks, get out you middle bastard!

  • Hi guys

I would like to make my forks a bit shorter and have read a lot about how to cut them etc etc

Im failing to find how to remove the peice in the middle of the forks that has the top cover of the stem screw into.

    thredless forks

  • It's called a star-fangled nut and you need to knock it down (preferably with a specific tool designed to keep it straight, like this). It's designed not to be able to move back up the inside of the steerer.

  • tap it down a bit, it might stay straight, it might go wonky, it's called a star fangled nut, there's a different and better version called a Hope Hed Doctor

  • it's also called a 'middle bastard'

  • Take the forks out of the stem, get something thin and longer than the length of the steerer tube (the tube the star shaped nut is wedged in). Wrap one end in something soft so it doesn't damage the nut, place it on the part where the screw screws in and gently tap it all the way down the tube until it pops out the bottom!

    Simples.

  • Dam.

  • Hahaha. Thanks guys

  • And if your choice of brake caliper allows, i agree that you should get the hope hed doctor
