fiiinally got round to picking up a basket today, guys are TFG did well to put up with my fannying about putting on a new sprocket as well...
basket=slow, 50:17=fastLooks like you could put the basket much closer to the head tube? would handle much better i would of thought
Yeh, means hammering the strut flat and drilling a new hole though, surprised they're not more adaptable, if they need shortening on 62cm frame...?
Same problem on mine to, very annoying! going to get the smallest wald basket for my Surly, i want to tuck it in close as possible.
Looks like you need a Project Porteur Rack v1.1(basket/box to come as a QR attachment soon) ;D -

I did this with mine (although for a different bike than the one it's on now, so it's slightly off but I can't cut the supports any more without making them too short...) and I guess it is annoying but it doesn't take long, the metal's really soft. I didn't even hammer it, I just squeezed it flat with pliers.

About to start building my Steamroller, so far I've decided on the following parts:
Crank-*Sugino Messenger RD2
BB- Shimano UN54
Wheels- Halo Aerorage
Stem- FSA OS115
Bars- Profile Airwing
Saddle- Charge SpoonWondering what headset to go for. I've heard the Cane Creek S3 is a decent choice. Being a novice though, I'm just wondering if it will be compatible with the stem. Can anyone help? :)

So I'm looking to turn an old MTB into a bit of a tank. I was thinking;
Deda Drops
Shimano DA Aero Brakes
Barend shifters,
and new tyres.
AFAIK, that should be enough to get it reasonable and on the road before any bad weather hits us.
Any suggestions for tyres, or shifters? -

Rusty - That should work fine. I've had a couple S3 headsets and recommend them. For the money, there's not much, if anything, that can beat them.
As the stem is 1 1/8" same as the headset, it should work fine, but just double check the frame has a 1 1/8" head tube, as think some of the earlier ones had an inch head tube.
Apart from that, looks like your parts list is pretty good for a complete novice!
What size frame you going for? -

whats the neatest solution to fitting a water bottle cage to the seatube on my frame with no cage mounts?
-

Depends on the shape... cable ties...decathlon make a strap on cage also. Have a search. Lots of stuff.

Bit of inner tube around the seat tube and under cage and then zip tie the cage on top.
Can hopefully see here -

What size frame you going for? Thanks :) Going for a 56, I'm 5'11-ish so hope that be about right. I was worried that the stack height of the headset is 28.8mm and the stem says 35mm fork clamp stack height. I don't really know what that means though!!

The headset stack height means that once it's installed it will, in effect, add 28.8mm (usually has an upper and lower for both parts of the headset) to the length of the head tube, and the stem stack is the measurement from the top to bottom of the clamp at the steerer tube of the forks.

Cheers mate. I'll be getting the debit card out then!

Think the 56cm steamroller has a 73.5deg head tube too, so not as tight as a track frame, is still tighter than a road race bike. Decent frames.

APC - this is the one Jake mentioned, looks pretty substantial, and being rubbery, shouldn't budge much either. http://www.decathlon.co.uk/bottle-cage-attachment-apb-300-id_4766980.html

Slowly getting there with the Alan, stupid shimano chains so i need to get get one of those pin things, once thats done im gna take it back to micycle to get the wheels trued and give it a good check over to make sure i dont kill myself cos ive done something silly
Hopefully will be ready to ride for saturday

If you put a Wipperman connex quick link in instead you can take the chain off to clean it. Buy two and you've got a way of mending a chain broken out on the road (with is advisable with geared bikes as chains snap far more regularly).
