Ti frame - stripped BB cup

Posted on
  • OK, not sure I have much of a question here but maybe a cautionary tale. Bought a cheap Planet X Ti frame 6 months ago and installed an FSA Mega Exo BB that I had lying around which was used but in fairly good condition. Threads all greased, very careful not to cross thread etc etc.

THe bike has been used but not every day by a long chalk. Today riding home I noticed some play, took the cranks off and the drive side BB cup just fell out of the BB shell along with the cranks. On inspection the threads on the cup are completely stripped. The internal threads inside the BB shell seem to be OK ish - they aren't as bad as the BB cup - so hopefully the frame isn't scrap. I haven't got any spare BBs knocking about so will need to buy a new one and check it can be successfully fitted. fingers crossed.

Must admit I am shocked the BB could be trashed that comprehensively - anyone seen anything like this before or can tell me what I did wrong so it doesn't happen again? Many thanks

  • i demolished an aluminium phil wood bb cup on my ti frame, i then upgraded to the steel ones which were fine
evidently the cup was not set up tight enough to start with and the little bit of play wore the threads out on the aluminium ones

have now changed to an external bb crankset and that has been fine

  • Slightly off topic but also related, I'm getting a creak from my drive train when pulling away quickly and stopping. I have an aluminium BB cup and when I've been re-greasing to try and solve the issue I noticed some of the thread on the end of the bb cup had broken off. Could this be causing the creak? Where can I get a steel bb cup from?

  • In response to Dancing James's post I've been looking for steel outboard BB systems, the only one I can find is the Phil Wood for £95, a little bit more than I would like to spend tbh.

For starters DO NOT RIDE IT ANY MORE until it's checked out.

It's been checked out, I've taken the bike apart twice cleaning and re greasing and taken it to my LBS to get the to check it over and they can't find anything. They tell me to keep doing what I'm doing, everything is tight and there is no play in anything. I fitted a new chain the other day thinking a badly worn chain could have been the cause, it's not as bad anymore but still there.

  • Getting a bit OT here but I had this and had to grease the chainring bolts

Oh really? It's a brand new chain set and I have tightened up all the chainring bolts, I didn't think to grease them. thanks

  • Grease the outside of the bolts as well i.e. where they interface with the crank and chainset

That could be a logical cause, its only when I pull away quick and skid stop. Clicks once or twice then silence. I'm positive it is something to do with the chainring or the sprocket but I've done everything apart from this.

Will give it a go, thanks!
