  • For sale: 979 vitus frame and forks.

With regret I've decided to part with Vince. I've come to the realisation that i'm too fat for this bike. Far too fat. I think Vince the Vitus is somewhat relieved by this fact. Happy to be out from behind the couch, and happy to breath the air of a free man/woman/metal. Happy to be free.

Have a heart and give Vince the home he deserves.

    • 56cm CTC
    • The lions share of an athena headset (needs bearings).
    • Excellent condition, no dings, dent, deformaties, discombobulations, ditches or dimples.
    • English threaded BB
    • Stamped 56 on the head tube and 55 / 57 on the dropouts.
    • Internal cable routing.
    • Ofmega sit pin bolt
    • Stronglight Competition french thread bottom bracket

It's not been thrashed, and is in really good nick with a unique paint job. It's former life was that of a cafe cruiser for a ex pro racer out of Belgium (clearly not me) - this sounds like bullshit, but it's not. Ask a question, I'll tell you no lies.

Was £120, the £100, now £75 ono. Good luck and god speed.

Anyway, let me know what you think.

ps. I've just realised how shit these photo's are. Please let me know if you want to take a look at him or need any more flicks. He's a vain bitch, and is way up for photos. Saucy cunt.

  • Price drop bump

  • Beautifull. But not really my size. If only it was 2cm bigger.
I always wanted one of those, but i don't know if i can trust, old alluminium.

  • Very nice and ascetic decals.

    Have a bump

  • very pretty! (too small for me though)

  • Vince isn't pretty, he's staunch.Just ask your mum.

    Thanks for the comments.

  • Vince isn't pretty, he's staunch.Just ask your mum.

You make Vince sound like a Flemish cyclist of old like Rik Van Looy!.....Not pretty but pretty effective.

What is the TT length [C2C]?

How whippy or instable was the frame at speed or on poor surfaces? Any ghost gear changes? Condition of bonded joints?

  • I'm interested in this! It's a little bit different from the usual stuff and it seems pretty cheap too.

Just to calm my nerves, what is the worst thing that could happen? It's obviously in pretty good nick so could it just be a bit flexy? I'm no massive masher, just a skinny hipster type...

  • ^^ Top tube CTC is 56cm (so it's 56cm square).

Regarding stiffness, these bikes traditionally have less lateral stiffness then other alu frames due the light weight small gauge tubing and construction method (bonded rather then welded), but this also means that they are far more comfortable then the average bike. I wouldn't recommend this if you were 90kgs or above or if you intend to ride it everywhere aggressively, but as a cruiser (i was going to build it with portuer bars, magic gear and a coaster brake), he'd be unstoppable.
There are some bad stories out there regarding bonded frames such as these, but as i said, this one is in excellent condition and has never been ridden in anger. If i was concerned in ANY way about the quality or condition or the frame I wouldn't put him up for sale. Thanks for the interset, and I'm open to offers.

  • I am 79Kgs...so more pygmy hippo than hippo!....I did indeed have one back in the late 1970s-early 1980s and don't recall any problems....i was about the same mass then.....might have had a smaller frameset.....i don't ride that aggressively at least don't think i do....but i'd ride geared with drops etc and take your point about safety....i average about 15-17mph with a bit more going down hill and a good deal less going up hill..i have made an ebay bid on a frame but i can retract that.....Do you have a 25mm seatpost?

  • ^ I don't have a seat post sorry. Would you like to take a closer look, or do you want some more photo's?

  • I am in Cambridge and at a guess..you are in London......a seatpost won't cost the earth and you seem to have a later model than mine as yours seems to have a traditional seatpost bolt....mine had the little grub screw that was sited at the rear of the seatpost cluster.....need to have a think about this..... i'd change the name.....Sean as in Kelly....he rode a 979 very successfully?

PS: regarding the headset....i take it the bearings need replacing....are the bearings caged [lions and cages...a theme methinks] or loose? Though not questioning their morals.

  • Sunny sunday price drop bump - now £90

  • Do you any parts to go with it?

  • Hi! Would you accept £75? I live in Peckham and can pick it up asap!

  • Hi Leanne, Yeah, that would work for me. PM me your details and we can work it out.
    Cheers

  • ^Leanne had to pull the pin, but I'll hold that price of £75 if someone wants it.

  • Hi, is the frame still available?

  • Yep, he's just waiting for a loving new owner. Are you that guy, Samn? Are you that guy?

    Be that guy, Samn.

  • May I ask the rear spacing?

  • You may, but I'll have to measure and confirm this afternoon after work.
    I'll let you know

  • May I ask the rear spacing?

As requested - 120mm rear spacing.

  • rats, wanted 130, thanks anyway

  • I'd forgotten that I had a bottom bracket in my parts bin as well. So this frame now comes with a french thread, Stronglight Competition bottom bracket (sealed bearings) in really nice condition. I'll hold the price at £75 including this.

  • i'll take it then and use different wheels
