  • Am tempted by the transfer jacket for work in winter, packs down small, so would fit in a pannier but will keep me warm when standing around.

  • I have a Pearl Izumi puffa that I use in exactly that way, James. You can wear it for a gentle commute in sub-zero conditions without sweating up and in your 'normal life', of course.

  • Winter jersey, Belgian or Italian? Please talk me out of parting with 140 sheets by telling me there's a better winter jersey that will be cheaper and will make me look less of a twonk even though you know I will stick my head in sand and buy it anyway!

  • winter jersey is different to the country jersey, it has a windproof lining at the front

I've got a Uniqlo down jacket for this purpose, £40 I think it was, toasty warm and packs down to the size of a small bottle of water.

  • ^ They are doing them again, this autumn/winter. For those that don't want to spend 190.

This isn't the thread to taalk about Uniqlo heatech stuff though,,,

  • Its the Brevet jersey I'm after.

Nice though it is, I can't help feeling its a bit pricey.

  • about to splash some case on a couple of these bad boys http://www.rapha.cc/winter-baselayer/

anyone got any idea of the sizing? are they particularly tight?

Spoken like a man who doesn't wear silk neck scarves

  • really like the look of those winter baselayers.. Also like the new hardshell jacket as well..

Yep - my mistake, I meant long sleeve country jersey. Still undecided.

At the risk of making this thread sound like a broken record:

    1. Go to Uniqlo
    2. Buy thin merino
    3. ...?
    4. Profit

the normal base layers are big! i sized down when buying them as they are quite stretchy anyway

  • ^ this, also, order two sizes (get free postage into the bargain), send the one that doesn't fit back (free returns).

  • I think they've done a pretty good job of getting more people wearing lycra...whether that's a good thing or not is 'in the eye of the beholder'...

At the risk of making this thread sound like a broken record:

    1. I wouldn't want to wear uniqlo jumpers as a baselayer. They itch
    2. They are sweatshop manufactured from unethically sourced merino (whether or not this is an issue for you is up to you, it is for me)
    3. They are only available in long sleeve
    4. They are not cut for cycling
    5. The merino doesn't last or wash well. I have rapha baselayers that are 2.5 years old and still mint after being washed once a week and uniqlo jumpers that have fallen apart after 2 months of use.

All that said, Rapha should stop hiking the cost of them. They were good value a couple of years ago, not so much now.

  • no vents on the hardshell would be very warm. Probably only wear it 5 days a year

  • yeah would be amazing for the first 5 minutes when you are cold but then like a boil in the bag microwave dinner for the rest with it fully unzipped and flapping around like a dragsters parachute

  • I suspect the Hardshell is in response to customer demands for something 100% waterproof for commuting, rather than extreme riding conditions. Seems like overkill for actual UK road riding.

    They'll sell loads. ;)

  • One dry winter and the memories fade! Hardshells have their place.

    :)

  • isnt that what a rain jacket plus layers offers?

  • isnt that what a rain jacket plus layers offers?

    shhh you'll ruin sales

  • they need to add a rapha portable radiator to the range. this is the only way to stay dry...after your ride is finished.
staying dry during is a myth.
i got soaked through yesterday wearing a rain jacket waterproof overshoes and waterproof bag cover so yes miro_o there is a place and its called the rubbish bin! altho none of it was rapha...

  • I bet you didn't get cold.

Actually WTF were you doing in all that when it was 15c? HTFU.

I got that the other week. Its too warm for the current 12 degree commute in the mornings. But looking forward to using it as a winters jersey. Rode all last winter in -5 with just the pro team jersey and arm warmers. Works but the first 20 minutes are hell.
