Better frameset than Dolan Precursa for £200?

Posted on
  • I've been after a relatively cheap secondhand frameset with track dropouts and a carbon fork to biuld myself a basic singlespeed.

I've not had any joy yet so I'm starting to wonder about going new.

The Dolan Precursa and Alpina fork seems like a decent frameset for not much cash.

Are there any other similar options available that I should have a look at?

  • spent plenty of time pondering this myself.

second hand , if you drop on lucky , then theres plenty of stuff better than , but new , i dont think so , looks pretty nifty for 200 dorrar , been really tempted myself , quite a few dolans make appearances in the sled thread. and they look fuckin' great.

  • ppl are snobby bout them but dolans are great value for money - The pre cursa isn't too tracky so great for use on the road

  • I've had both the track champ and the pre cursa now. I downgraded to a pre cursa but to be fair I find the ride better. It doesnt feel much different weight wise, and only gets used on the road anyway as a HHSB. It does feel a little stiff with the carbon track forks and long rides can get uncomfortable. But £200 for a brand new frame set, you really cannot go wrong :)

    I totally rate them!

  • Use mine as a braked ss commuter, great value frameset.

  • Thanks for the replies. Seems like they're the clear choice.

  • Had one a while ago and they are great for the money. Another option is the Nelson (if you want a more garish colourway) but they only seem to have small size in stock now. Had one of those too and the Dolan was slightly better for the road.

Builds up into a nice light bike and the complete at £450 is pretty good going too as the Navigator wheels work pretty well too.

can you get a rear brake on them ?

They aren't drilled, and I wouldn't advise drilling but you can get clamp on brakes like these...

    aaahhh , nay worries.

  • I recently set up a pre cursa for work and I absolutely love it. I used to ride a Nelson pista frameset a while back, which are only £229 have nicer smooth welds but they only do them in a 51cm now and I stopped riding it as its a bit small for me. But yeah, if a 51cm is good for you, the Nelsons are lovely too. You might even be able to hunt down a larger second hand one.

Drilled the seatstay brace, no biggie.

  • I bought the Dolan frameset and I love it. I've got the track forks on mine which can be slightly harsh on bumpy roads, but they also do a road fork option, admittedly it's only Dolan branded but it's possibly better suited to you if you plan on using it for a long commute. I've ridden a 70 mile stint on mine and I didn't find it at all uncomfortable with some wide road drop bars on. It is a really quick bike, accelerates nicely and is good at high cadence.

  • also, if you haven't bought a frame yet there is a fuji classic track f+f and BB 54cm in black, good condition going for £100! if i had the cash i'd have that straight away
