  • OK so I wrecked my Adidas Cyclones in the wash, my Spesh MTB shoes are worn out and i've wrecked the ratchets - time for new shoes!!

So i'm looking for suggestions, I don't want dedicated MTB shoes as I want these to be practical walking around. I really liked my Adidas Cyclone shoes but the now discontinued which is a shame, they were stiff, fine to walk around in and easy to take on and off. So i'm looking for something similar but don't want to replicate the golfy look.

Also I would consider making some high-top shoes from Vans or similar, is there another thread on this?

Interested to hear people's recommendations. Cheers.

  • I really liked my Adidas Cyclone shoes...
Seems like there is/was a fair bit of crossover between Adidas and Mavic when it comes to cycling shoes, so it might be worth your trying out some Mavics?

If you do go down the DIY route, I seem to remember someone on here recommending putting the donor (in)soles in a very low oven (~70C) to soften them up before cutting to shape.

  • If you're looking for new ones, Mavic Alpines look good. Also Lake MX100 look solid.
Teva have done a new clipless shoe which looks slick too. Then there's five 10, and all the other shoes which look a bit more skate like.

If you're making your own get some with a thick enough sole to recess the cleat enough. Good to have a strap too.
Always thought the Vans Mountain Edition with strap would be good...

  • +1 on Mountain Editions, crap if you're using straps but I reckon theyd make great shoes for a conversion...

  • Thanks for the Adidas/Mavic info, I was looking at Mavic as an option.

All SPD cleat shoes i've ever used have had a normal insole and the stiff part of the shoe is built in. The cleat mount is a plate or around 4x6cm so unless I find an old pair of spd shoes in size 11 then that option is out.

I've found vans (and most vulc soled shoes) tend to be pretty shit for conversions as the sole of the shoe is too thin. You end up walking on the cleat.

  • If you're looking for mtb shoes that are good for walking around in, and you aren't opposed to looking like a dork, you should get the specialized touring shoe that Pique and I both have.

  • Surely DZR are on trend right now?

That's what I'll be getting next.

  • DZRs are pretty ugly heavy.

  • and fall apart at the mo ..

But I'm afraid that the boa thing would probably snap off in a crash.

  • DZR could be great but they have some way to go to get them up to scratch. I'm sure they're working on it though. Right now they're not good for polo.

  • I have a pair of flip-flops I could let you have for cheap.

  • Seriously, I have a pair of 510 Minaars, which are excellent. Not cheap, but have lasted a year of polo without falling apart.

  • I have been using jonos old 661 filters for the last six months after my nike conversions fell apart , I'd be tempted to buy those or 510's next. I was looking at the Cyclone High Tops for the winter (http://fiveten.com/products/footwear-detail/10925-cyclone)

Or might be tempted to try these for another pair of conversions (http://prollyisnotprobably.com/2012/04/retrofitz-turn-any-sneaker-into-an-spd-cycling-shoe/)

  • Mavic Alpines are awesome. Best shoes Ive had.
Apparently they bought out the addidas cycling shoe range so you can't get them anymore. Some good ones crop up on eBay though if you're patient. The Minrett are good.

Is no one wearing pooh bahs anymore? Dang.
I like them for better ankle protection than the Mavics however.

I have some dzr not for polo which are awesome but agreed not good enough for polo.

  • Nike SB skate shoes seem really tough. Turning them into cycling shoes is pretty easy and fun. This will make the best shoe for polo IMO.

  • did you get a size bigger than you would normally rupert?

  • Seriously, I have a pair of 510 Minaars, which are excellent. Not cheap, but have lasted a year of polo without falling apart.

+1 for 510's my Hellcats are at least 18 months+ old and still going strong.

  • yeah all very good but they all look shit with my skinny jeans.

  • did you get a size bigger than you would normally rupert?

I didn't, and it's fine now they've worn in. But at the beginning it was a little tight. When you add in the spd footbed you take some height out of the toe-box.

  • thanks man.

  • i just threw up in my mouth
