Have you actually tried that out as it sounds like the best of both worlds?
Switching the chainrings on the compact chainset to to 52/38 means I can go back to 50/34 or 50/36 for alpine excursions.
Stronglight also do 110BCD versions of their CT2 chainrings right up to 53/39. Which would potentially be even better assuming their not like soggy noodles. I'm sure Tester will be able to provide some input.
