I cannot locate a second citation from a news source but his cycle club have posted this on their news page:

    07th September Update

Dear Club Members and Cycling friends

It is with very great sadness and regret that we write to let you know that our club member and cycling friend, Gordon Butler, passed away yesterday, Weds, 5th September.

We understand that Gordon was out on his bike near Glasbury, 7 miles from home, and that at this stage it is unclear what exactly happened. He either came off his bike or was knocked off and was airlifted to Cardiff Hospital where the staff were unable to save him. There appears to be no witnesses that have come forward and the Police are investigating.

Of course, our deepest sympathy and condolences are with his wife, Pam, who will let us know us know when arrangements for Gordon’s funeral have been made and would appreciate attendance from any cyclists who are able to attend but realises work commitments don’t always allow for it.

Pam would like us to remember our fond memories of Gordon and his competitive spirit. He was an inspiration to us all with his many records and achievements. I know Pam would be grateful for you all to keep in touch through the difficult time ahead for her.

    Chris Hughes

    Hereford Wheelers

    My sincere condolences to Pam.
