Campagnolo headset

  • Hello,
i've a campy headset 25.4 x 24F, but i'm not sure what bearings this should use. I read that most of the vintage record track use 25 balls with 5/32. Is it true? I don't have the original balls so i can't measure them..
Using 25 balls is the same as use 22 balls with cage?
    hope you can help me
    thanks on advance

  • dmczone thanks for your help, but my question is: using 25 loose balls it's the same as use 22 balls in a cage?

  • First of all, excuse me for upping this old thread. I’m a new member and because of nursery period unable to start a new thread.

I just bought a frame with Super Record Pista headset with loose bearing balls. Frame came with only 42 bearing balls (fork was disengaged for transport by the seller). When I started to assemble the fork, it came obvious that 42 balls aren’t even remotely enough. So my first question: Should these headsets have 25 loose balls on both lower and upper crown? I have seen NOS bearing set on eBay which had only total of 48 balls.

I installed 25 balls on lower crown and rest 17 on upper crown based on thought that lower crown/cup will carry most of the pressure caused by the person on the bike. What is your opinion, am I in danger of damaging upper crown/cup when there are only 17 balls?

    Cheers!

  • New balls are ridiculously cheap at most local bike shops. Go to a good one with one of the balls you have to measure the size and spend a fiver. Either use a cage or as many balls as you can fit in the race.

  • Get your balls sorted out as your man suggests.

Is there a general rule to filling a race with balls? Eg. one less than full up?

You can buy cheap sets of Weldtite balls on eBay which come with a tube of grease.

I don't think so. It depends on the precise geometry of the races and where the balls sit while loose in the cup compared to where they sit between the curves of the cup and cone races. If, when the cone is pressed into the cup, there's space for more, add more. Once the cone's in, the balls will sit in the same place whether there are a few too few or the right number. If you have too many then they'll sit further out and be jammed together so the bearing turns roughly.
