I can see a few benefits, as you just explained, but there seems to be less pro's than con's to me.
From my experience disc brakes are great when they work nicely, but they can quite easily not work great and end more more hassle than they are worth, but i only had like 3 bikes with disc brakes and all low end, so i don't know...
