Well I went up there on a modern road bike with about 3 weeks notice and did it in 1 hour 50 minutes having done the Malaucene side that morning. I do a fair bit of road riding though!
Do the Malaucene side if you get a chance! It's a completely different challenge. I think it's probably a bit easier overall, though it does have a nasty 4k in the middle of the climb which sticks around 13%. It does flatten off after that though!
Took your advice, and tried the Malaucene route this morning, good fun that! Legs felt shit first thing but the climb isn't that bad and the descent put a massive, shit eating grin on my face. 86.3kmph downhill, overtaking cars in the sun. Beautiful.
