Anyone had a tyre come off whilst riding?

  • Happened to me last night, and I wouldn't recommend. First I knew about it was a thwump thwump thwump, and then a bang as the inner tube went, as it would.

Turns out part of my tyre had come off the rim, so the inner tube popped out the other side. Luckily I was going in a straight line at the time. Reckon I must have pushed it off by skidding sideways too much at the lights about a minute beforehand, but it seems a bit bizarre.

Anyone else had a similar experience?

  • Yes, looked down to see tyre wobbling like crazy and then boom, a fantastic gush of air to the face, quite refreshing really. but quite a pain

  • sometimes if the tyre isn't seated properly and there's a gap for the inner tube to force it's way out of it can start wobbling then BANG as it explodes

or if the rim is a bit knackered and you put a bit too much pressure in it can force the tyre off gradually

  • Yeah, on my Kona - relatively skinny rims with 2.3 tyres, neglected to check tyre pressures - landed a small jump a bit sideways and off it rolled.

Also, riding without a tyre is surprisingly bearable on a smooth road.

  • I've had a tub roll off.....

  • I've seen full speed tub roll off crash... nasty.

crabon bike KO'd, rider down and massive tissue loss on his arm.

    bokes

Yeah, this was on the Walworth road. They've just resurfaced for the Olympics, but only in sections. The bits they've left are awful

This must have been what happened. I replaced the tyre about two weeks ago and it's a bit thinner than ideal for my rim. Suprised it could do this with properly inflated tyres.

    • Adds spare inner tube to that collection of bits in the bottom of bike bag -
  • Had a folding tyre explode off the rim in the middle of the night.scared the crap out of me

  • I put too much pressure in a clincher yesterday to have it explode, it completely trashed the rim, I was so lucky as it happened 20 minutes after I had ridden it home from work.

Massive user error fail, on the plus side it already had a couple of dings in it and I had been looking for an excuse to book a wheel building class and now have one.

    ha those are the best
    inflate tyre just before ride
fanny about in lounge for 5 mins getting shit together
hear inredible BANG, think someones been shot right outside front door
    find tyre deflated

    replace tyre / inner tube

  • Sounds scary - reminds me i should sort out my tyre, I'm waiting to a new one to come as my tyre a hole in it from a puncture. I've had to puncture repair the innermtube and tyre, just to keep the inner tube in.

I hope it holds and dosnt explode.

  • Three times.
Twice pumping a new tube up and hadn't got the tyre bead seated quite right, massive 120psi bang right to the face, ringing ears.
Once at the Bethnal Green/Cambridge Heath junction, side of the tyre pinched itself between the edge of a sunken drain, tyre and tube completely blew and left peds diving for cover thinking it was a gun being fired.

  • Had my first one last week - new folding tyre, new inner tube.

Pumped up to 120psi, blew as I was screwing the valve cap on. Was in a garage too, ears were ringing for a good half an hour after.

  • That split second when you notice a bulge, and rush for the valve to try and let out the air only to receive and inner tube explosion to the face... priceless...

  • I did it the other week with a new tyre that wouldn't seat right.

Could see the bulge growing out of the gap between rim and bead and then just exploded in my face.**

Had a tube go while trying to pump up a tyre in the garage too - I'd somehow managed to fold the tube over in the tyre, enough for it to explode. Breezeblock garages don't half cause an echo.

**There is a less dodgy way to word this, I'm sure.

  • Argh - wish I hadn't seen this thread!

  • Had a sidewall blow out in France a few years ago. Inner tube wrapped around the rear brake and cassette, wheel locked up and the rear rim was destroyed. All at around 30mph going through a French village.

    V v scary

  • Had a Pro Race 3 on my rear wheel blow-out going down Dark Hill in Richmond park earlier this year. The force involved shredded the side wall and popped it clean off the rim. Really bloody lucky to stay on the bike at that speed

Scary stuff to say the least. Scrapped both tyres the next day
