A new 10 speed tigra cassette is c£20 and I'd bet you could find a used 10 speed for £10 with some egal eyes.
As for the crank issue, I thought all shimano shifters were capable of a tripple? Or am I just talking out of my arse? In which case the existing front mech can be used, no?
Then when he's got more cash, grab some new cranks and use the FD or just sell it to offset some cost.
But tbh my point was a general one. I sold my DA group for next to nothing because I needed cash quick. It's a common story and forums are often great places. Plus it keeps everything in the family so to speak.
