Wanted: Shimano Compact Chainset

Posted on
  • Hi,

After a few rides on the weekend I've realised I need a lot more bike time, but also I definitely need a compact crankset.

Currently I have a 6700 Ultegra. So a nice swap would be for a 6750 Ultegra.

But right now I've decided to prioritise practicality over looks. So I'll take any Shimano compact crankset that will fit a "Shimano Integrated Press Fit" - which I think is a BB86.

Or if anyone has the shims that would give me more choice that would be great too.

Probably BB86, which uses the same diameter and overall width as their HT2 external BB but with the bearings pressed straight into an oversized BB shell rather than separate screw in cups. In theory, I think you could use a standard SRAM GXP (not BB30) crankset using the same kind of shim that Chris King & Hope use to make their external cup BBs adapt from HT2 to GXP. KCNC K-type cranks should drop straight in in place of Shimano.

  • what's your cassette out of interest?
    I ran a 50/38 on a std 130 bcd with an 11-28 cassette which covers 119.9"-35.8"
a 50/34 compact with a 12-25 gives you 109.9-35.9 gear inch range. Whilst the jumps between sprockets are bigger at the lower end for the 11-28 you'll be able to utilise the 38 ring far more than the 34, the only useful mid speed ratio on that is in the 12/13 cogs.
If you do go compact, I'd suggest you get a 36 ring unless you are doing particularly hilly rides.
here's sheldon's online gear calc so you can work out what you need http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gears/

  • Cheers for that. I was going to ask about the inner ring on a compact. It's still my road bike, so I don't think I need an incredibly low gear. It's just at the moment there is no way I can keep my spinning speed/cadence(?) at anything near the same level on a hill.

My rear is 12-27t - bought largely because of a *very *cheap online deal on a 105 one and got Evans to price match. Also I was worried about too great a max size for the rear mech.

I guess the issue is that I would then have to buy a new inner ring and rear cassette. Which is probably going to knock on +£60.... but that is cheaper than the £200 Rotors I had started to convince myself of :S
