  • Cheers

  • Hi, noob here, been lurking for a while so thought it was time to post. I've decided to build a fixed gear commuter after my mountain bike got stolen. So far I've settled on either a Brother Steel Track Frame (£350) or a Surly Steamroller (£215). From searching the forum both seem to have good feedback. Obviously there's a bit of a difference in price, so my question is, how much better would the Brother be?

    Cheers

  • Got a little update on my Roberts. I was heading towards full Dura Ace with it. Headset is CK gripnut, chainring is Sugino and sprocket is EAI, the rest is DA from various eras/groups (AX/7410/7600/7710).
I think I'm done with it, just need to clean my chain and get different tires.

  • Can't see the pictures!

Also, i'll have those tyres back if you don't want them :p

  • Schools on tomorrow and I just finished the briefcase carry solution for my commutyniner, monsteur, dad mobile, whatever.

Sorry for massive spammage. Now I'll go cross post in FBNPNA.

Now that the post finally got approval it's already lost on another page and noone will see it if I don't repost it here.

    Pictures sorted, thanks to Sumo.

I like those tires, just not on this build. Sorry fella.

They are quite different from each other, I looked into both of them a lot my self actually, not sure how much you know about them?

  • I really like this. Was thinking of transforming my Brooklyn into similar machine. Are those 26" wheels? I had Halo Freedom Disc 29er rims laced to Shimano XT hubs on my mind.

  • The wheels look 700c to me. It also looks like massive fun.

Does something clever happen with flipping for the rear wheel? Can you run it SS with second brake hooked up?

  • ^it can be done, yes, just needs ss convertion kit with spacers for it.

  • pepe i still got that da cog if you're keen:)

  • Not a lot tbf mate, I've always ridden mtb's but been looking to get something a bit more road oriented for a while, even before my bike was stolen. I'm looking to build on a relatively small budget and heard both were reliable steel road/track style frames. What would the advantages be of each?
Cheers mate, sorry for the lack of knowledge :)

  • worst pic ever..but you can see where i'm going with my cougar. Enjoying the newly purchased suntour cranks. Got a hatta headset, gipiemme caliper, probably a phil cog and a chain to come, then she will be just about finished! Woo-fricking-hoo! Needs some pictures in natural light, the paintjob is loads lighter than appears here.

    mega!

Looks great, wheels suit it nicely. Didn't have time to rebuild the Panasonic, looking forward to tomorrow afternoon!

    I paid for them, DIBS!!

  • I agree, this wheel set suits it better, and the one it had, will suit your Panasonic spot on. I thought you would be finished with it by now :)

  • Nah, got home this afternoon, had time for a shower and some fish cakes then straight to work! Will be fitting them tomorrow morning when I get home. Can't get over how nice the rims are, 1000x better than TB14s!

  • Glad you like them!
I love my Wolber TX Profil. At 20mm outer width, they are not very far of the width of TB14s (as on my other bike), and after todays test ride, I can approve, they ride damn nice too! Never had complete set before.

Can't wait to see Panasonic out of a slavery!

I'm assuming that was a reply to my reply, sorry to hear about your bike to.

Both are good, the Brother has more typical track geometry, steeper angles, higher bottom bracket and a shorter top tube which would give a more aggressive and nippy feel, but its a steel frame that fits 28c's so its still pretty practical (but depends on how define practical). Then the Surly has geometry more like a road bike, the bb is lower and the top tube is longer, so i guess it would be a more relaxed positions (but also depends how you set it up) also has clearance for huge tyres or mudguards using P-clips, probably more practical but maybe not as fun as the Brother.

You may also be interested in the On-one pompino? the frame is on sale for £100 at the moment, has a bit of a mtb vibe but without the hole sluggish feel.

    hope that helped.

  • Are you comparing the Steamroller with the basic Brothers frame? If so I think you've got it twisted. The Surly has the steeper HA, shorter wheelbase and 'stays than the Brothers.

    Lovely looking bit of kit

  • I don't know what the bro love is about between TM and Doc P, but your Roberts is banging mate!

    Loving it.

So whats going down about the wheels? ;P

  • There was a Dura Ace exchange on Friday.

  • The great 2012 DA shuffle.

I sold my NJS wheels (DA to Araya Gold) to Dandy, then bought Laner's wheels (DA to Wolber TX) , which I gave to Doktor P, who then gave me his (DA to Araya clinchers)....

    I think that covers it.

Laner got money, we all got the wheels we wanted.
