Turns out my failed CM10 install on the SGS1 was because of a bad download, did it straight to the phone over work's wiki so couldn't do an md5sum before trying it.
Also, forgot I'd need to factory wipe it.
Almost fixed now, just need to get the GApps back and sync contacts.
Revelation of the day: you can USB-mount the internal storage when the phone's in ClockWork'Mod Recovery :-D
