There's not that much unity within either party in terms of ideas. Just look at the primary season. Infighting everywhere. But once a candidate has been decided upon, that's the candidate. You've got two parties, and your shitty candidate is better than their shitty candidate.

That said, and I may be being hopelessly naive here, but I just couldn't imagine Nick Clegg saying what Ryan whatsisname said about Rape, and not be drummed out of politics.
