It's interesting (as an outsider) to observe political debate on some US forums of which I am a member.
My perspective is that some of what (for example) the Republicans espouse seems to make sense, but the overwhelming majority of their view are pure swivel eyed lunacy- the legitimate vs. non-legitimate rape stuff, and the foetus being alive weeks before conception spring to mind.
I have no idea how their supporters manage to ignore this stuff- it's like supporting your husband whilst he fucks the nanny I suppose, you feel that you have to stick by him.
