I'm looking forward to seeing the surface offering. Windows have designed something that looks great.

^ Agreed. I'm an Apple man for home computing but really want a Surface for travelling with work. It's got to be better than lugging a huge laptop about!

not a netbook, and not a desktop replacement.
soul I would advise an ipad or similar tablet, but they want a keyboardmy girlfriend has last years version of this and while it's smallish, it's not really a 'netbook'
i like it, if i wasnt a mac user I would have got one instead of my ipad i think.
edit: I fall firmly in the camp that beats by dre is overpriced tat for brand lovers but the audio on the laptop is actually pretty good and very loud for a small machine (twice that of my macbook)

You could get a pretty decent Thinkpad for <£400. I have a T420 and it's by far the nicest PC laptop I've used.
-
• #331
what do people think the RRP for the surface tablet will be?
if it's close to or under £400 might try and see if minds can be changed -
• #332
All current rumours point to the price being at or below £400. Some even say as low as £250 although that seems dubious to me...
Microsoft will have to compete with the iPad on price and so at or below £400 is almost a certainty.

I definitely like the idea of using it for travelling. Fed up of lugging laptops abroad. #firstworldproblems
For my money it seems a bit more professional than using an iPad to work on.

Even more so if they bring an ipad mini out.
(EDIT) Just read there will be a surface and surface pro.
Looking forward to seeing that in the flesh - the keyboard makes it really.
Although will it run native windows programs or need apps?
-
• #335
I think the Surface (at least the consumer one) will run Windows 8 RT which is the arm based OS. This means that apps will need to be re-written to work with it.
Maybe the pro will run Windows 8 x86. This will mean normal windows apps will run.
-
• #336
The first is an ARM-based device running the Windows RT OS aimed at consumers, while the other uses an Intel-based chip to provide the full version of Windows 8 Pro.

bah, beaten.

^^ Repost :)

Wonder if the pro will still be as thin and portable though.
Looking at it I wonder if Windows should have made hardware a long time ago.

Windows?

nuke that massive picture then get yourself to the nursery.

I feel I need to get a new laptop whilst I can afford it. I like the compact'ness of my IBM X60 but I prefer the marginal power and lack of fuss (see ways to procrastinate) on my macbook.
I'm wondering if i should sell both and buy something new. Maybe a second hand MBP or maybe an IBM X200 which I then get an SSD for and stuff to the gills with RAM?
-
• #344
Spotter didn't you just buy/build a shit hot computer?
-
• #345
I did, but Its a tad awkward to lug that round to jobs. I was trying to do some mild photo edding on the train yesterday and CS5 was chugging on the dear little X60. Its not so bad on my macbook but its one of those white ones and it overheats like crazy
-
• #346
Yep my white one gets very hot too.
-
• #347
the annoy thing is it does it for seemingly no reason. i was working on my desktop yesterday whilst listening to music, I was thinking to myself that I didn't remember it being this low quality and hissy. Turns out it was my MB roaring away in the background, nothing running on it but it was 84c
-
• #348
hhmm. It was on a flat surface? Was it running flash? Those macbooks get very hot which is annoying as I like to use on my lap and can't.

it was doing absolutely nothing whilst sitting on its own little ikea laptoptable, its pretty much relegated to web duties these days. It sits by
my bed so I can trawl whilst watching tv. -

Good plan. Apart from the 7770. In my opinion. You could save almost £30 by getting a 6770 and their performance is basically the same. 6 series cards are diiiiiiiiirt cheap at the moment too.
Obviously it isn't my PC, but you can also get a 6850 for the same amount as a 7770 and its performance is much better.
I went to yoyo tech today and was told the opposite: some shit about the 7770 needing a power supply how better specs don't always mean better . I went in wanting a 6850, but they didn't have one in stock, nor did anywhere online reasonbly, so I settled for the 7770.
stupid?
How soon do they need it? There are going to be a lot of Windows 8 tablets launching on or around October 26th, in the price bracket you're talking about, with the keyboard attachment. The Microsoft Surface is looking nice: http://www.microsoft.com/surface/en/us/default.aspx
Also, it might be worth noting that you can pair an Apple Bluetooth keyboard (http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC184B/B/apple-wireless-keyboard?fnode=56) to the iPad.
