seriously, if anyone has problems fitting obscure racks, mudguards etc then 36/18 is the person to go to, a massive drive in garage has been converted into a workshop, and he has weird bits of tubing etc that can be abused to into new purposes.
fitting the mudguards took as long as building the rest of the bike, lots of looking at the issues and working out neat solutions to non standard problems

That's come out looking really nice James! Good job there. Hope the result makes up for all the hassle involved in obtaining it.

My noodles were waiting when I got back from the Netherlands yesterday, will chuck them on later/tomorrow- looking forward to seeing what difference they make

Looks great, lind of thing i want to build, but i am going to wait until the new wave of hudraulic levers come out, very interested in the upcoming TRP ones mated to ultegra D2i

James. I am keen to hear your thoughts on the robustness of the hope setup and whether you think they could easily be used with additional crosstop levers.
When I mean robust, please bear in mind my propensity for crashing is quite high.

This, along with a full on race orientated disc only cross frame will be on my Christmas list.

hope brake set up looks and feels robust
have not read any accounts of someone smashing it up, i guess the bracket would bend first.
not sure how much cross tops would affect the setup, but i think it should be fine

thanks to Dov I now have some Nokon cabling for the brakes

considering the ortlieb back roller plus in black

or back roller white

I can heartily recommend Altura Drylines' too

Choose the lightest simplest one you can James.
The bag with lots of gizmo sound great but on a day-to-day affair, it's a little annoying, whether the Ortlieb make it more convenience.
-

I like the Ortliebs in general, not too fussy, well made, and you can buy spares. When I did the JOGLE last year I used carrier bags to break down the kit into sensible groups as my panniers had just an internal pocket on the rear face,.
Also, I suspect black will look smarter for a lot longer than white.

the rack i have ordered states it will not work with the back roller bags made before 2007, so i think i should be safe with a new back roller plus set of panniers

Is it too late to suggest a Carradice Barley Tweed?
-
• #466
i have some carradice bags, the attachment mechanism is clunky, and the sliding clip has slid off both of them
do not want!
i borrowed femtonatt's ortliebs and was really impressed with them

Then go classic and tell modern twist to shove his thumb up his arse.

My Ortliebs came with a set of inserts for the clips that mean the bags can be matched up with a range of rack rail diameters, you should be fine.

^ this.
Nearly all Ortiebs I've sold have shim to fit all sort of rack diameter.

the rack and panniers have been ordered
back roller plus bags and the tubus airy rack
functional bike will be complete pretty soon
-
• #471
This is good news.

• #472
a pair of these
and this
are waiting for me at the office and i am working there tomorrow
bike is hours from completion
today i hope was the last time I have to cycle with a full tool kit and track pump on my back
-
• #473
someone else has built a pretty similarly specced bike to mine
though i have the carbon forks, hydraulic brakes and a less scoble riding position
-
• #474
That joker dont even know how to fit a rack straight.

Um.. I must have missed the reason for this, but why so well prepared?
Is this you?

the hydraulics need to have one spacer above and one below the mounting bracket
so all i can lose is 2 extra mm of spacer below the stem and get a stem with a slightly less aggressive drop, it's annoying how the new thomson smtb stems have the logo both ways up, whereas this has it upside down
I could trim the fork a little more but want the option of a more upright position later
