Lordship Recreation Ground Model Traffic Area
It was opened with great ceremony in 1938 by Mr Leslie Burgin, Minister for Transport amid wide press coverage. 800 children clamoured for tickets to ride on one of the 30 model cars or dozen bicycles. Nearly 22,000 bicycles and cars were hired out within a month of the opening.
It used to be used as a road safety training area with road markings, traffic lights, crossings and even a miniature police box. Although
many of the original features are no longer in existence, the model traffic area is still a popular place for young cyclists to play. Here's a brilliant news video from 1938.
Also, did you read the plaque on that bicycle sculpture?

New tag reminds me of this:
No clue.

Also, did you read the plaque on that bicycle sculpture?
No, I'm afraid I didn't even notice that there was a plaque.
That video's wonderful.

That video's wonderful.
Looks like red light jumping was a problem in back in 1938 too...
@ 1:28 re stopping at crossings...
"...That’s how not to do it, by deliberately doing the wrong thing the children learn how necessary it is to do the right..."
Followed by "...isnt that so inspector?" [So they also had junction watch back then too]
So maybe red light jumpers are simply deliberately doing the wrong thing to learn how necessary it is to do the right.

I should clarify that I think the video is completely wrong-headed. :)

Hello. And thank you.
I figured that after 179 pages of lurking enough was enough. -

Ha.

You b***ard! So that's why you were out on the road this morning and then heading home so early.
Actually, what tickled me most was that I looked at the second picture and I was like "OMG I know that" and then I was like "zOMG I know that bike" and then I was like "Dur, look at the gherkins, idiot!"

Nothing personal, you understand.
-
• #8944
no worries!
My failure to recognise who was posting this was disturbingly similar to my having on a number of occasions seen a Bianchi emerge from a house down the road and only seen the rider when he accosted me at about 3am one summer morning in an immigration officer's flat in Horley. -

Well, this thread's really on fire today!
The fact that Jurek says I can't play is no real hardship, as I'm not free to roam today anyway.
