Hewitt Road and Track bikes

  • Thought id put up a thread for my bikes.

This is my current Hewitt track bike, built it slowly up over the years and this is its current guise. On the list of things to do it is build up a new set of wheels. currently have a set of Mavic pista hubs and looking to build them up with Open Pros or tb14's. Also a new paintjob as the current paint is strarting to look tatty. currently thinking a gunmetal grey.

Ive been looking to build up a road bike for a while, and ive just committed to ride from Stockholm to Gothenburg next year, so dont fancy doing the 350miles fixed. Found a nice hewitt on ebay last week and have got so attached to the track frame I couldn't turn down the idea of building up a hewitt road bike and bought it.

Need some work doing to it, need wheels and levers for a start. needs a respray too. Tempted to do it the same as the track bike, gunmetal too. Anyway ill put up my progress as I go along.

Crappy ebay pic for the time being:

  • With the track grips, I wasnt making use of the area where the grip finished and bare bars started so have gone for cotton tape.

  • Nice frames!
What tubing are they? I've got a Hewitt track built with Columbus SLX tubes, but I've seen 531 ones and other Columbus. Seems they use a pretty mixed bag.
Really nice set up on the track, looks really good with the bullhorns.

  • Mine's Columbus genius

  • I'm not sure, when I bought the track frame the guy didn't know what it was and hasn't got any decals on it. Was gonna ring Hewitt at one point see if they had any info on the frame number. The Road frame is 531c tho

  • Coventry eagle, do you have a track frame too? Ive seen a purple hewitt knocking about on kingsland rd before.

  • I think Coventry Eagle's is a red road frame.
Remember seeing it in CP not long ago.
Purple one sounds awesome. We should start some kind of owner's club haha.

  • Been a while since Ive updated this...

Got the frame in the post and was in ok nick. But had a few problems, firstly the stem was seized which ended up with me hacksawing it out

Next thing to get out was the bottom bracket. but that was siezed too, so ended up with me hacksawing out the bottom bracket

Trying to get the other shell of the bottom bracket I manage to tear the driveside chainstay. with the edge of the vice.

it kinda put a damner on the project while I looked at finding somewhere to get it fixed. Having a look around I heard about oak cycles which is only a 5min cycle from my work which was perfect.

I went done and met with Ryan, he has a stash of old 531 which was perfect. and did an amazing job on getting it to tie in with the look and feel of the existing framework

Ive nearly got all the components for the build so will do another post with all the bits

  • built up the bars today, looking at a matching it closely with my current fixed

had a quick look on the fixed.

  • Got the frame back from Armourtex. Colour ref - Steel 41 with a gloss laquer

  • Realised I never uploaded a finished build....
