• lol sounds lovely. Good to see it's all good.

  • changed saddle and seatpost on my bike two nights ago and now the fucker creaks everytime I put any kind of effort into pedalling.

sounds like it's the crankset though (although creaks are good ventriloquists so could be coming from anywhere).

skipped riding it today as it was too loud/often to be disconcerting enough that I was worried something might snap/fall off.

will be fettling away at it tomorrow methinks.

  • CHAINRING BOLTS

(is my answer to anything now)

  • i prodded at them with a finger and they don't seem loose. wish i knew where my chainring bolt spanner thing was as i could give them a tighten.

  • Peg spanner.

You won't find it - They like to hide.

I'm sure I have a family of them living somewhere in my kitchen.

  • Reminds me my chain breaker tools gone awol its gotta be somewhere in the garage... somewhere...

re check saddle & seatpost bolts would be obvious place to start...

  • I'm going to re-lube the chain as well, it's only been on 2 weeks but it's been hot/dry so maybe it's in need of a lil something something.

  • Derp. Just sheared apart a chainring bolt, still hoping that even over tightened bolts caused the creaks...

  • Sugino 75 bottom bracket-

This is what's left of the non drive side bearing casing after approx 8 weeks after installation: (not by me):

Awful photos but you get the idea, complete disintegration.

Anyone else come across this problem, anyone running one everyday for the commute in all weathers? (This was not used everyday in all weathers)

  • Hello everyone. First post so I hope you can help.

I have a problem with a creak on my bike (a Pearson Touche which I run as an SS with an ENO freewheel) that doesn't seem amenable to the usual fixes. I have stripped/greased everything I can possibly think of from the chainring bolts to the headset to the track ends to the saddle rails to the stem and bars to the BB to the cranks to the pedals and well... everything.

But the creak is still there and it's driving me bananas. Now, after all this, I THINK I have tracked the noise down to the chain, and specifically - perhaps - to the tension in the chain. The reason I say this is because of all fixes I've tried, the thing that seemed to make the most difference was when I refitted the chain slightly tighter than usual and the noise actually got worse.

The obvious answer would seem to be to slacken off the tension on the chain (which admittedly does seem to help with the creak). However, I run the bike on a White Industries ENO freewheel which has really shallow teeth. I find that unless I run the chain tight (and I mean really tight) there's a risk of it shedding when peddling hard over bumpy-ish ground (which has actually happened to me twice in traffic and nearly got me squished).

    SO, two related questions:
    1) Any bright ideas on how to fix the (apparent) chain creak, if that's what it is?
    2) Any bright ideas about chain tension on an ENO freehub? My gut feeling is that my chain is still too tight but I don't want to risk it shedding under pressure again.

  • What's your chainline like?

  • Pretty straight so far as I can tell. That's the puzzling thing - everything seems to be set up just right but a) it creaks and b) the chain sheds. Is there any way I can measure the chainline more accurately to be sure I've got this right?

  • I've had this with a worn chainring and chain in the past. It looked like the chain was grinding up the slope on the worn chainring teeth, making the noise.

  • thanks, I was having the same problem...until now

  • Butters (and fungumble) you have given me hope. I will examine this further..

  • Take a good look at the U shape in between the teeth. If it isn't a nicely rounded U any more it's probably dead. A decent new chain like an Izumi or something can be had for under a tenner and you are bound to use it at some point in the future if it doesn't fix the problem. Good luck dude!

  • Just a quick question(s).

Basically, I'm kinda worried about my bike

Firstly there is a large cracking noise coming from my bottom bracket area when i'm accelerating and stopping, I can't think what it could be as I got a brand new bottom bracket when I got the frame, which was in June/July time. I was thinking it might be the cranks but they aren't loose and the noise travels around the frame.

Secondly, when I'm out of the saddle riding up hill there is a clunking noise coming from the front area, either my headset, hub or forks (if it's possible). I can't think what it could be, and like my other noise, it travels around the frame.

So to conclude, I feel like i'm going to die when riding my bike.

  • Mine's been making noises like that for months and I'm still alive...

  • maybe fully rebuilding it is a good idea, well its a good idea for any bike, just spend a day taking everything apart, clean and re-grease it, tighten it up properly and so on

  • ^ or just check tightness of all bolts in the first instance... no need to take everything apart immediately, although good practice once in a while.

  • Yeah I need to buy a crank pull and bb tool then I can strip it down. I just re-greased and cleaned the headset the other day so I think it may be the front hub?

  • swapping the front wheel out is an easy enough thing to do - pop along to drinks and I'm sure someone''ll loan you one for a couple of minutes. alternatively find an unlocked QR wheel at your nearest bike rack and hope you can return it before the owner returns

  • I fitted a new crankset the other day and when I pull away I get a click/creak coming from the drive side of the crank. The chain line is straight, the BB is about 2 months old if that. I also fitted a new saddle but I've check that and its all tight, could it be dirt on the BB or the chain? Then chain has been on for a while with a not very straight chain line, could the chain be nackered?

I'm kind of concerned, should I or am I just being paranoid!?

  • Did you grease everything when you were putting it together?
