  • What exactly is the point of this?, i think i'm missing it. Am i to assume people go cycling with flats and cycle to this street pump to pump up their tyres? Or is it in case you get a puncture, repair the puncture only to find out you forgot your pump (which i think is quite unlikely if you didn't forget to bring a spare inner tube or puncture kit)

    Excuse my stupidity :p

flat - fix - pump up with tiny emergency pump - cant get to more than 60 psi without pumping for 1/2 hour - enough to roll on - street track pump - up to normal pressure - awesome!

  • Also, weekly topups for non-trackpump-owners.

  • I'd guess at 80% of people who own bikes don't have a pump. Bike shops don't want to lend you their pump as if it gets broken then people are loathe to pay for it.

  • ^ I worked at the Free Cycle Parking enclosures in Hyde Park (provided by Cyclehoop) during the Olympics, we had a pump that was for the public to use and you wouldn't believe how many people asked to use it; running your tires at ridiculously low psi seems more common than you'd think (and it was also good for people who happened to get a flat in the area and only had a crappy hand pump with them)

Same here, I worked for cyclehoop too and lots of people wanted to use the pumps we had

  • that not a very long term investment - the pump will probably b outdated in the next 5 years then ed (psi wise)

Who's in their right mind would pump their tyres up at a stupidly high psi?

A lots of hybrid tend to need around 40-60psi, roadie probably less than 100psi unless you're heavier than average.

Topeak are a lots more reliable.

  • Oxford Cycle Workshop used to do free pump ups in the street on a Monday morning, you see alot of people riding around with rediculously low pressures in their tyres and not everyone who uses a bike has their own pump or basic tools. If these pumps are tough enough to survive London's streets then I think they're a good idea. Are there plans to install them in other cities too?

  • I guess there is a place for these after all, although I will probably never use one, if these aren't widespread enough then the chance of you running into one when you get a flat is low. But it does sound like a good idea.

  • it's a great idea, especially when I got a slow puncture and needed a top up at 12am in the evening.

End up walking home 6 miles, even more annoying that the one near the Imperial War Museum was broken.

  • needed a top up at midnight
