Internal geared hub on langster steel

  • I have a Specialized Langster steel 2010 and I would like to gear it up if its possible.
    Its the same OTP set up. I use it as SS for commute during the week and long-ish rides on weekends (hence the need of gears).

    I came across this wheel and I wanted to know if its possible to use it on my bike.
    It doesent come with a sprocket or a shifter so basically the cost of everything would be around £285.

    I dont mind a 3 geared setup if the cost difference is big but if the 3 geared options in the market like sturmey archer wheels are around £90 + the cost of shifter and sprocket so around £150. But I havent read much about them as much as I have read about Alfine 8 spd (Sheldon loves them). I havent read anything good about SRAM internal hubs. For Alfine I dont mind paying £120-£130 more if i get a good quality hub + 8 spd + a good rim (DT Swiss TK 7.1). I can't afford a Rohloff hub.

    I have found some documents on shimano website about the hub.
    In the installation guide there is no mention of a track dropout.
    But they have used the nexus 8 speed hub in charge tap with a track dropout.

    And i think if I do go for this then i cant really have a deep V wheel in front and a low profile rim at the back for aesthetical reasons ;) So i guess i will have to go for this
    So everything will cost me around £400.

    Is this practical or should I just sell the bike and get a new geared one?
    Ofcourse the only geared bike i like is Condor Fratello (mainly because of the steel frame and the geometry) which is not exactly cheap.
    And mostly I love my Langster.

    Also I would like to know if anyone has any experience with the Alfine 8 spd hub.
    Or in general internal hub-on-track bike experience will help.

  • Don't know that much about hubgears, but my first thought would be to check out the drop out sizes to make sure they'll fit.

    Pretty sure from another thread the new shimano stuffs meant to be good.

    I think there's a site called peter whites or something (US wheelbuilder) and he has alot of info on hub gears.

  • Why don't you stick to it? I mean fixed wheel/singlespeed, how long has you been riding it?

    personally if you intend to use it on long ride, a change of cockpit may be your best suggestion, such as a normal drop bar with brake hood for hand position (3x instead of 1 and a half*).

    As for the 3 speeds, this is a perfect opportunity to build another bicycle, teach yourself on what frame you need (sizing) like the top tube length, then slowly one by one get part together (the more time you have - the cheaper), and soon you'll have a 3 speeds bicycle for long distance while having a fixed wheel bicycle on the side.

    Of course this is all my opinion, it's up to you however you want to do your bike, and yes hubs gear are expensive, remember your spacing is 120mm, whether the 8 speeds hubs are 135, best to stick to 3 speeds, because you're riding singlespeed, you'll find 3 speed enough for almost everything, you can use it on your frame, you just need some zip-tie/bolt to hold certain cable and the like to make it work.

    *if you're still using the track bar that come with the Langster.

  • Oh also re installation check the fuji track thread. There's someone there with a SA x3 fixed on a fuji. PM him for some tips.

  • it's entirely possible to build another bike under budget if you're careful and know where to look.

  • i was reading about the dropout sizes, so the 8 speed alfine is 135mm and my langster is 120mm . . oh but wait there is hope in the Sheldon-land!

    I took edscoble's advice and started looking at bikes here and on flea-bay for around £300-£400
    Found some good ones too but . .
    I just love my langster cant imagine to be on any other bike right now ;)

    Or should I let it go?

  • You don't need to find a complete bicycle, just start by looking for a decent frameset that fit you nicely, or get a new one, like the excellent Surly Crosscheck.

    Considered it as a project.

    I have an Nexus 8 speeds wheel complete with all the cable and gizmo I can see to you, the Nexus is just like the Alfine, only it doesn't have mount for disc brakes which you don't need.

    I guess that is bit like internal hub vs normal gears discussion . .
    again I m going away from starting a project not because i m baing lazy but i m not in UK for long time . . I am from India and a student ;)

  • i mean if i have any prblem ther i will have to either switch to the normal wheel (hence avoiding the cold setting) beacause it will be almost impossible to get stuff in india.

    Also the nexus wheel you have, have u ever put it on a track frame with less frame spacing than 135mm (presuming nexus is a 135mm hub)?

  • it's nice to have two different bikes, a light singlespeed/fixed wheel bicycle and a sturdy 8 speeds bicycle that can handle whatever you throw at it, incidentally I have a similar set-up (but road bike instead of single speed).

    I'm not saying that the steel langster is weak, but I doubt it's a great bike for an everyday ride, the alu langster fit that bill better than the steel one.

    Do let me know if you want to buy my 8 speeds internal wheelset, it's cheaper than having to get it build at a shop, especially when it got all the necessary part to complete it.

    Right now, you should pop down to Brixton Cycles and talk to them about it, they'll know more about internal hubs and what's the best move for you.

  • my 1st ride was brighton on a single speed steel langster, the beacon hill killed me and most importantly i cant fucking take a fatter person get ahead of me just bcoz he has gears :P

  • Best Bike I have ever owned, totally possible, you just need a slimmer lock nut on a Nexus designed to take a roller brake, just remove that assembly and you're good to go.
