Visited the parts bin this evening (or as Mrs VL would call it, the shed) and had a quick hunt....
Since getting my ticket to ride the Eroica in Feb I've been keeping my eyes open for super cheap vintage bits (originally planning to build up a 1930's claud butler, but giving up for the time being due to the level of engineering challenge it presented!)...
This is what I dug out:
To make it go...
BB - campagnolo record - Part of a Job-lot that included a pair of Sidi Genius' which sold for more than I paid for the lot - hence FOC.
(need to check it's long enough for the chainset though!)
Chainset - SR "Apex" Fluted - Purchased from EPR (of this parish) for £5
Crank bolts - came with the frame
Pedals - Zeus Track pedals - £9 BIN on ebay (£12 total)
Toestraps - Black leather Cristophe - part of above job-lot (hence FOC)
Freewheel - The suntour perfect from the above wheels has scrubbed up quite well so it should be good - plenty of play in it though so I'll need to sort that out.
Spare Tyres - found a nice pair of Vittorias in the shed - part of a freecycle offer from ElDiablo (also of this parish)
Front Mech - Suntour - part of a job lot
Rear Mech and shifters - I've had a most generous offer from MrWolf (also riding the Strada Bianche) a straight swap: his Simplex rear mech and levers for my bottle cages
Tub-adhesive - Since I'm such a period-correct-perv it would be wrong not to use period adhesive - it's clement darling - £3
Gear Cables - Campagnolo with only a couple of seasons racing in them.
Spoke Nipples - recycled from the original wheels and left in a pot of paraffin
Total spend £20
Still to find
Toeclips - chrome, suitable for size 44's
Chain - probably best to go for a new one! e.g. CRC
Spokes - need to buy ASAP
To make it stop...
Front cable - found an unused campagnolo one in the shed
Aluminium ferrules - luckily I found a pair!
Still to find
Cantilevers - still no luck sourcing vintage CX canti's (looking for mafac, dia compe or weinmann frogs-leg jobbies)
Rear brake cable inner & outer.
Toying with the idea of white outers... not sure if that's a good idea
To make it a comfortable experience...
Seatpost - "Strong" 26.2mm - I think it's 80's - if I can find something better I will - can't be arsed with separate clamp/pillar chrome things though
Vintage handlebar End plugs
Dome headed nut to make the handlebar stem a bit neater
Still to find
Handlebar tape (white or tan cotton)
Shellac (for the bar tape a la francais) - not sure whether to go down this route or not!
Don't think I'll bother with lever hoods, these levers look pretty comfortable.
To make it look super-vintage
Bianchi branded toestrap to attach spare tubs to saddle rails
Still to find...
Chrome bottle cage & band-on clips
A plain white old-school bottle
A page of La Gazetta to wrap spare tubs in
Toestrap buttons (i've got a curious fetish for them)
