^ Cheers! I've had rapidfire shifters give up after a few years, something simpler would be more confidence inspiring.

I've had DA bar end shifters on a 9 speed CX-commuter set-up for a while. Took serious abuse. Still works (well the frames fecked, but the shifters work).
10 speed shimano wont work, as the MTB and road components dont play well. But 10 speed Sram does ('exact actuation' stuff). As does 9 speed shimano.
So with some Paul thumbies you can put together your own thumb shift MTB system using TT levers.
I have a bling bling TT900 lever, Paul thumbie, X0 rear mech set-up ready for the fat bike.
