  • I am having a few minor health issues 2 of which being bike related. I saw a sport specialist after months of asking only to be told by the sport specialist that I should just stick to general physio. I was quite upset actually. He told me if I can't squad down to a certain degree then there is nothing he can do to help. He just wanted to fob me off. In regards to draining NHS resources, I am very annoyed that instead of suggesting effective treatments to patch me up and never see the back of me, my local hospital seems to enjoy seeing me time and time again because they just can't be bothered to sort out my issues once and for all. I am only 26 and I don't wish to be called by my first name in the hospital but fact is, my issues remain unresolved. There, my rant of the day.

The bad news is that at 26 that first name issue is going to take a lifetime of aversion therapy

The good news - Neil, is that it's the one piece of therapy I can guarantee you're going to get.

  • Signed. Good luck with the petition.

  • Shameless bump.

Has nobody here been to the doctor with a sporting injury only to be told to stop doing sport with no advice on treatment and no referral to physio etc?

    Yes! Frequently. Signed.

But I have been told the GP's job is to make us well, not superhuman.
A bit like the AA man's job is to get your car started, not tune it up.

  • ^ I think what he means is hospital doctors not GPs. I have certain been told by a sport specliaist to stay away from the veledrome until my knee heals completely with no referral to physio and no folow up appointment.

  • Interesting question I'd never really considered before (about being discouraged).

I've been told to stop skateboarding before by 'health professionals'. Stupid advice. Skateboarding is superawesome and makes the world a better place, just like cycling and other active stuff.

'It's dangerous' is such a stupid thing people say about cycling. So's not cycling!

  • ... No one votes for more taxation ...

    Not true.

  • I'd vote to pay more tax in return for various things.

Back on topic...it'd be great if the NHS could provide more sport injury specific services to help those of us who do sport to keep doing it. The Public Health benefits are obvious and if the government are serious about increasing sport participation in the wake of the 'pics, now is the time to make some noise.

  • I absolutely need this kind of help.

I have some serious injuries which would mostly like be corrected by simple surgery, but I have no luck chasing it through the NHS for the past 4 years.

I really desperately want to compete in sports. But am not in a functional state.

  • Nobody ever got sacked for asking for more resources.

Every day, someone representing some special interest group calls for more NHS resources to be spent on their own personal special interest. And this is no different.

Now I don't disagree with what you are calling for, it is a perfectly reasonable request but the real question is, what are you calling to be cut, so that your speciality is funded?

COI: I'm a specialist in pain management - a specialty that rarely gets a mention and never gets you near any famous people.

  • Pain Management is a specialty that is horrendously under represented if the experiences of some of my amputee friends are anything to go by.

I see your point Yoav but the theory is that its Public Health etc that identifies where cuts can be afforded for the benefit of the patient. Not ours.

The purpose of these petitions is to encourage the discussion to happen...not force it to happen!

  • The reality is that health agendas are set by politicians, depending on what will enhance their reputations rather than by actual health needs. Public health doctors' roles in setting health agendas is no more. It is disingenuous to call for more resources for something without saying how you think it should be funded. It's the market that rules now.

  • And why you hear terms such as market forces factors in meetings between secondary care trusts in recent times.

You are correct but at PCT level there were some brilliant locally driven PH schemes. Lets hope the CCGs will be PH focused rather than financially focused eh?

    Anyway...enough of this banter.
