Gene Hoffmann
Gene Hoffmann used to sell his soul and pimp his ass out as a techno DJ. Now he's old, semi-retired and mostly mixes in his studio at home for fun.
Between 1998 and 2005 Gene played at Australia’s biggest and best dance music festivals, club nights and rave parties; including Hardware, Earthcore, Enchanted, Two Tribes, Sunshine People, Digital Music Festival, Future and Totem events. He was a regular guest on radio and travelled to play across Australia, Asia and Europe.
He supported some of the biggest names in the techno scene; including Adam Beyer, Richie Hawtin, The Advent, Speedy J, Chris Liebing, Joel Mull, Oliver Ho, The Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy, Green Velvet, Samuel L Session, Slam, Sven Vath, Magda, Mike Humphries, Carl Cox, Ben Sims and DJ Misjah.
As a part of the infamous Panic Stricken Bovine crew, Gene helped produce a number of legendary Melbourne underground events, including the renowned "Wild Things" parties alongside partners in crime "Decimal" Dan Rachele and Matt "Van Diemen" Burtt.
In 2005, during the ultra minimal and electrohouse boom, a burnt-out and somewhat uninspired Gene retired from DJing in public. He sold all of his records, equipment and moved into a DJ retirement home.
But after a four year hiatus Gene was bitten by the techno bug once again. He purchased some new gear, dabbles in production and now happily mixes in his studio, to his wife, kids and a few select mates. Every month or so he puts a mix online or appears on a podcast, and occasionally he crawls out of his hole for a good techno party. DJs are a vain lot after all. -
