They also don't allow cheap tickets on some journeys- book 2 years in advance and London-Winchester will be the same price as tomorrow.
But what you can do (although technically not allowed) is to buy a ticket to (say) Brockenhurst, which can be discounted, then get off at Winchester.
It's a lottery as to whether the guard lets you through the barriers though
