London-Portsmouth-St Malo-Vannes-Paris

  • Hi, I'm going to a wedding in Brittany and decided to go by bike and prolonging the trip touring about and pushing it to Paris as I need to pick up a car from there.
I'm departing tomorrow morning, got a ferry at 10pm.

Any good routes to portsmouth? how much time would it take? Should I just train it there?
Is there any maps with cycle routes I can buy?

  • Sounds like a great plan! I bought the Michelin map (with the small scale, don't remeber exact, but it's famous) of France when I did my tour and copied all of the possibly needed maps and took 'm with me. Otherwise, if you have space/don't care about the weight, you just take the whole damn thing or weed out the maps you surely are not gonna use. Then I just rode on the map, and took the black, smallest roads as often as possible. There is also a lonely planet "cycling routes of france" which undoubtedly has something interesting. I'm not in London, and I don't have it with me here to look something up for you.. Good luck man, enjoy it, and I hope that famous Brittany weather doesn't play up..

  • have a look at this london to portsmouth thread
it might give you some valuable information

  • Cool found it, thanks guys, I think I'll train it today, I feel like shit after 10 nightshifts

  • If you are going to Paris why are you going via Portsmouth? Newhaven-Dieppe is a much more pleasant route and there is a marked bicycle route all the way from Dieppe to Paris.

  • Because I'm going to Brittany

  • Are so you are going there first sorry slow on the uptake.

I would still have gone via Dieppe as the riding is great once you get to France but riding to Portsmouth from London is not nice the A3 should be steered clear of and finding paralell routes is difficult. Hampshire's nice though

  • yeah, It would have been nice surely, but would have had to research it more, and I'm pressed for time/tired so I'll take it easy and enjoy France more. I'm doing it fixed/singlespeed so LFGSS represent!

  • Ok, so quick update, I made it to the south coast of Brittany in 12hrs yesterday, I'm glad I took the train on Tuesday as the weather was shite anyway. I cried of happiness arriving and departing st-malo. I took the D roads pretty much in a straight line to Lorient. It's not as flat as I thought! I'm on a 38x17 freewheel and it's perfect as I've got camping gear with me. I'm sitting/standing on the ups, spinning on the flats and coasting on the downs
