The vet told me to give my cat a good chunk (mouse sized) piece of raw chicken a week, sometimes two. It's hard chewing work and helps clean their teeth so helps prevent gum disease. He had gingivitis at the time and it cleared up really quickly.
Considering how expensive my last cats teeth ended up being I'm going to stick to the raw chicken thing, although slightly less frequently than suggested - he is very partial to mice and the odd bird here and there.
