Difficult to tell without seeing your bike but why doesn't it fit? Can you not simply mount it further up the down tube so it clears the chainring??

One problem you'll come across with old bikes is that sometimes stuff needs modifying or fabricating to fit. Since the chainguard only covers the top and one quarter of the wheel, you can just move it upwards and forwards so it's in the right position, then make up some new brackets to fit it. Brackets are easy to make with some basic household tools (although having a bench vice makes things much easier). You might even find that normal P-clips will work, with some additional bending. Then paint the brackets (avoid using primer without a topcoat; it's porous) and away you go.

Cheers for the replys guys. The problem is the length of the guard and how steep the curve is where it bends around the chainring. It finishes about 4 inches away from my seatstay which means I'd have very long cable ties holding it.

Get any plastic hockney one from a LBS that usually come supplied with singlespeed/BMX bicycle, they can be adapted to fit any way you want.
the mount is on the seat tube, cut it out with a knife if it's not quite fitting.

That's what I've done, I got the White plastic one in the photo but the length of it is so short it stops about 4 inches short of my seat stay where I would have to connect it unfortunately. Anyone had much luck with wrapping the chain in split wire loom?

Or get an old metal one off of ebay or bike jumble - and measure the length before you buy it! It'll look better than a plastic one and last longer, too.
Ok so I've got an old Peugeot which has French threading, want a full chainguard or at least a hockey style one but unfortunately I've got a 52t chainring and can't find anywhere that does them for chainrings that big.
